About this Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)
Well abandonment of Oil and Gas installations is an inevitable part of the ‘Life of Field’ activities. It carries a very high cost with no commercial return, and it is also the most expensive part of upstream decommissioning.
This 2 half-day Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) course is specifically designed to give the participants a clear understanding of the engineering and cost estimations for well abandonment projects, with potential opportunities identified and risks mitigated. Innovative data-driven software is used to quantify and optimise the project scope and well abandonment cost estimates at the earliest stage. This provides a powerful ‘link’ between well abandonment engineering and cost estimation. This method is adopted by major oil operators and companies involved in the supply chain in Europe, Asia and Australia to improve the basis for more effective decision making.
By the end of this VILT course, the participants will be able to:
- Understand the different types of engineering and costs estimates and their appropriateness
- Identify and apply alternative well abandonment methods
- Objectively quantify risk and cost impact
- Understand the logic behind calculations of the individual elements used
- Identify risk elements within the estimate
- Identify cost saving opportunities
- Gain a ‘hands on’ experience with modern methods, using the Apollo software
This VILT course is intended for engineers and supervisors in Plug & Abandonment (P&A), well intervention, drilling. Decommissioning managers, performance managers, commercial & business planning support, and business finance professionals will also benefit from attending this course.
- Basic or Foundation
The VILT course will be delivered online in 2 half-days consisting 4 hours per day, with 2 breaks of 10 minutes per day.
Course Duration: 2 half-day sessions, 4 hours per session (8 hours in total).

Previously, he worked for Shell in Europe and Southeast Asia in various operating companies and the corporate center. His expertise is in Upstream decommissioning, business performance improvement, finance and strategy. He leads business growth, well decommissioning projects and performance analysis, and energy transition developments. He is outcome-driven and a natural collaborator, working effectively with engineers, operations and executives. He has a Masters in Industrial Engineering & Management and an Executive Masters in Finance.
Trainer 2
Your second expert course leader is a well abandonment trainer and WD Apollo software lead. She heads the Research & Development division of the software, collaborating with the Aberdeen Net Zero Technology Centre and several large IOCs. She assists clients with well decommissioning and planning optimisation projects that leverage on the software. Examples of these projects include the platform well and subsea abandonment projects in Australia, Asia and Europe, including rigless and rig P&A. Previously, she spent 7 years on North Sea and Caspian-Black Sea engineering projects in various roles at Baker Hughes. She has an MSc Decommissioning from Aberdeen RGU University and a BSc Petroleum Geology with Honours from University of Aberdeen.
Trainer 3
Your third expert course leader is a WD Apollo trained well abandonment trainer and a developer of training materials. He assists operators and supply chain engineers during the P&A project planning and evaluation. He is involved in onshore and offshore P&A planning including deepwater, and large platform campaigns. He has cleansed and converted large 130+ well North Sea campaigns into the WD Apollo software involving over 40,000 records which then provides strategic insights to the software clients. He works hand in hand with the clients to continuously improve the company’s SaaS. He extended the WD Apollo software with campaign and daily operation functions for a Major IOC. He has an MSc Decommissioning from Aberdeen RGU University and a BSc System Engineering & Management from Delft University.
