About this Training
This comprehensive 5-day course focuses on the critical role of geomechanics in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects, with particular emphasis on containment risk assessment and Storage License applications. The program provides a structured approach to identifying and evaluating potential leakage pathways, understanding how underground stress changes due to prior hydrocarbon production and CO2 (re)pressurisation impact injection rates and storage capacity, and ultimately determining the technical feasibility of CCS projects.
The course progresses systematically through essential components of geomechanical characterisation and risk assessment, covering fundamental principles, simple analytical approaches and more sophisticated 3D modeling approaches. Participants will master a comprehensive workplan for subsurface characterization and learn advanced modeling strategies to forecast critical elements including: stress evolution in the cap rock, changes in fracture gradient within storage and sealing formations, strain impacts along complex well trajectories, and fault reactivation potential. A significant portion of the course focuses on selecting relevant evaluation scenarios, and how and where to interrogate analytical, 2D and 3D geomechanical models, which is crucial for containment assessment in Storage License applications. Throughout the program, special attention is given to uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis to establish safe operating parameters.
What sets this course apart is its alignment with regulatory requirements and industry standards. Participants will learn detailed reporting and documentation guidelines that comply with ISO standards for CCS projects, enabling them to effectively address regulatory body inquiries. To this end, a structured template word document is provided as part of the training. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications through daily exercises, quizzes, and discussions, ensuring participants develop both the technical expertise and documentation skills needed for efficient and successful CCS project maturation that complies with the ISO standard. Whether you’re involved in project planning, execution, or regulatory compliance, this course provides the tools and knowledge necessary to assess and manage geomechanical risks in CCS projects confidently.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Master the fundamentals of stress analysis and pore pressure behavior in geological formations specific to CCS applications
- Evaluate seal and well integrity for CCS projects using geomechanical principles and risk assessment methodologies
- Assess fault stability and potential induced seismicity risks in CCS operations
- Develop competency in field-scale modeling strategies for predicting geomechanical changes during injection and storage
- Apply uncertainty and sensitivity analysis techniques to establish safe operating limits for CCS projects
- Produce documented evidence covering geomechanical characterisation and assessment aspects in compliance with ISO27914 standard
This course is intended for professionals who have a basic understanding of geomechanics and are looking to develop or enhance their expertise in CCS geomechanics. Ideal participants should have 2-3 years of experience in either petroleum geomechanics, geotechnical engineering or geological sciences.

The course employs an integrated learning approach that combines theoretical foundations with practical applications. Each day is structured to include lecture segments followed by hands-on exercises, creating an engaging learning environment. Interactive discussions and quizzes are interspersed throughout to reinforce key concepts, while practical exercises help participants apply their learning to real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach ensures that participants not only understand the theoretical aspects but can also apply them effectively in their professional roles.
Your expert course leader has over 30 years of experience in the oil & gas industry with in-depth expertise on subsurface and geomechanical risk assessments. He is one of the two authors of Shell’s global minimum standard on CCS containment assessment, provided technical assurance to many development projects, and contributed to or led many technical projects. Currently, he is external team member of DNV’s CCS certification services and participated in various projects over the last few years. Furthermore, geconducts risk identification, assessment and assurance reviews for CCS projects globally, and provides international training in both CCS and geomechanics to exploration and production operators and regulators.
