About this Training

This 5-day course provides a comprehensive overview of depth conversion and depth imaging for seismic interpreters. The first part of the course focuses on the fundamentals of depth conversion, including understanding velocity fields, practical velocity representation methods, and appropriate depth conversion techniques. Participants will learn how to perform basic and advanced depth conversions, quantify depth conversion uncertainty, and integrate well and seismic data to ensure reliable results.

The second part of the course delves into the theory and practical implementation of prestack depth imaging. Participants will gain an intuitive understanding of the differences between time and depth migration, the various depth migration algorithms, and the critical quality control steps required to ensure stable velocity solutions and geologically reasonable results. Topics covered include parameter selection for depth migration, tomographic velocity analysis, and full waveform inversion.

Throughout the course, participants will engage in exercises and case studies to reinforce the concepts and methods presented. By the end of the course, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively design, guide, and quality control depth imaging projects in a variety of geological settings. They will also learn how to leverage depth imaging outputs, such as seismic attributes and well-seismic calibration, to enhance their interpretations and mitigate risks.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the compatibility of well and seismic data, and establish appropriate methods for linking and validating the database prior to depth conversion and depth imaging.
  • Differentiate between ray-based and wave-equation-based depth migration algorithms, and understand the advantages and limitations of each approach for different geological settings.
  • Appraise the form of velocity updating (tomography, full waveform inversion) that is most appropriate for the specific geological conditions, and establish a reasonable target velocity resolution for the tomographic updates.
  • Implement an optimal approach for calibrating and integrating well control data with the depth-migrated seismic volumes, including quantifying depth conversion uncertainty through stochastic modeling.
  • Analyse the stability and resolution of depth imaging results, and leverage advanced seismic attributes (e.g., elastic inversion, brittleness, azimuthal anisotropy) to enhance interpretations and mitigate risks.

This course is designed for professionals who involved in seismic time interpretation, time-to-depth conversion, and the planning and interpretation of depth-migration projects. Participants should have a basic understanding of seismic processing and interpretation. The course aims to provide these geoscientists with a comprehensive overview of the theoretical concepts, practical methodologies, quality control procedures, and applications of depth conversion and depth imaging techniques. This knowledge can then be applied to improve their interpretations, mitigate risks, and enhance reservoir characterization efforts.

Your expert course leader, based in U.S., is a highly experienced petroleum geoscientist specializing in geophysics and geology, with a career spanning over three decades. He began his professional journey as an Exploration Geophysicist in Denver, focusing on structural and stratigraphic plays in the Williston Basin. His expertise led him to roles such as Exploration Advisor in Houston, where he integrated multidisciplinary teams on global projects, and later as Manager of R&D at Schlumberger-WesternGeco, where he developed advanced depth imaging methods. Since 2003, he has worked on numerous domestic and international projects, mentoring companies in seismic imaging technologies and applying innovative machine-learning techniques for oil and gas reserve estimation. His contributions to the field are recognized through five U.S. patents and numerous publications, underscoring his impact on advancing geophysical methodologies.
