About this Training

This 3-days course offers a comprehensive exploration of subsea production control systems and umbilicals, designed for professionals in the offshore oil and gas industry. This face-to-face training program provides participants with a deep understanding of the various components, design considerations, and operational aspects of subsea control systems.

Day 1 of the course introduces participants to the fundamentals of subsea control systems and umbilicals. It covers different types of control systems, factors affecting their selection, and field layout examples. The day also includes a detailed overview of both topside and subsea-located equipment, as well as sub-surface controls and interfaces. This foundational knowledge sets the stage for more in-depth discussions in the following days.

Day 2 focuses on the design aspects of subsea power and communication distribution systems, as well as hydraulic distribution systems. Participants will learn about electrical and optical field simulation, umbilical component sizing, and various types of flying leads and connectors. The hydraulic portion covers fluid types, cleanliness, and wear mechanisms. The day concludes with an exploration of Master Control Station (MCS) and Subsea Control Unit (SCU) interfaces, including system overviews, mimics, and alarm configurations.

Day 3 begins with a review of the previous day’s material before delving into subsea production control system design guidelines. This section covers industry standards, government regulations, and equipment ratings. A group exercise allows participants to apply their knowledge by designing a conceptual control system. The course then moves on to subsea safety system design and control system operations, covering critical aspects such as shutdowns, interlocks, and redundancy. The final part of Day 3 addresses installation and post-startup considerations. This includes load-out and installation procedures for umbilicals, Installation/Intervention WorkOver Controls (IWOCs), and Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance (IRM) practices. The course concludes with an overview of underwater vehicles used in subsea operations, including ROVs, AUVs, and USVs, providing participants with a well-rounded understanding of the entire subsea control system lifecycle.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate and select appropriate subsea control system types based on field-specific factors such as well count, stepout distance, reservoir conditions, and water depth, demonstrating the ability to optimize system design for various offshore scenarios.
  • Design and analyze subsea power, communication, and hydraulic distribution systems using field simulation techniques, with a focus on umbilical component sizing and the selection of appropriate flying leads and connectors for specific project requirements.
  • Develop a conceptual subsea control system design that integrates industry standards, government regulations, and equipment ratings, while working collaboratively in a team environment to address complex design challenges.
  • Formulate comprehensive subsea safety system designs and operational procedures, incorporating shutdown protocols, cause and effect matrices, interlocks, and redundancy measures in compliance with regulations such as CFR30-I1B-250 Sbpt-H.
  • Create strategies for the installation, maintenance, and repair of subsea control systems and umbilicals, including the application of advanced technologies such as ROVs, AUVs, and USVs for efficient lifecycle management of subsea assets.

This course is designed for a wide range of professionals in the offshore oil and gas industry who are involved in the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of subsea production systems. Ideal attendees should have some basic knowledge of offshore operations and are looking to enhance their expertise in subsea control systems, umbilicals, and related technologies to advance their careers or improve their project management capabilities in this specialized field.
