About this Training

Fold-and-thrust belts contain major hydrocarbon accumulations in complex structural traps. Hydrocarbon exploration in many onshore fold-and-thrust belts is commonly very difficult because of rugged topography and complex structures. Seismic interpretation in these terrains could be arduous due to the generally poor quality of seismic data. The correct application of thrust tectonics concepts and the relationships between folding and thrusting (e.g., thrust-related folding) become a powerful tool helping the interpreter in deciphering and reconstructing the complex subsurface geometries of structural traps.

This course provides an overview on how the use of the concepts of structural geology can be applied to make better structural interpretations. The principles behind the construction of balanced cross-sections are discussed. The participants will learn theoretical and technical approaches to seismic structural interpretation of compressional structures illustrated by numerous examples from around the world and experienced by hands-on exercises.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Master the principles and definitions of fold-and-thrust belts
  • Explore the seismic imaging in thrust belts
  • Learn the lesson during the exploration in thrust belts
  • Familiar with the principles of balancing and restoration
  • Understand seismic interpretation through 2D and 3D case studies

This course is designed for those who are working in thrust belt settings during the exploration and/or appraisal and/or development stages of the project.

Your expert course leader is a seasoned Senior Technical Advisor with an extensive track record spanning over 25 years within the upstream oil and gas industry. His remarkable journey includes serving as the Technical Director for Delta Energy and occupying crucial technical roles at renowned organizations such as TOTAL S.A. and FINA E&P. His career commenced with Arco British Ltd, where he embarked on his remarkable path in the field.

Throughout his career, he has been at the forefront of multifaceted studies, contributing his expertise to every stage of the upstream process. This encompasses early exploration and basin assessment, comprehensive reservoir characterization, strategic planning and execution of seismic and drilling operations, prospect generation, initial production efforts, sophisticated reservoir modeling, and the re-evaluation of aging hydrocarbon fields and basins. His specialized focus lies in carbonates and fractured reservoirs, where his profound knowledge has been honed. His impactful projects have spanned across four continents, encompassing a diverse range of tectonic settings and sedimentary basins. Additionally, his commitment to knowledge sharing and professional development is evident through his facilitation of more than 60 technical training courses. These courses have benefitted over 950 professionals, equipping them with the tools and methodologies necessary for effective characterization of carbonate and fractured reservoirs.
