About this Micro Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)

This 2 half day Micro VILT  teaches analytical methods to get a reasonable estimation of the maximum expected Ultimate Recovery by a viscous dominated displacement process like water, polymer or gas injection. Such estimation will allow the Reservoir Engineer to see the gap between the current booked ultimate recovery based on the current development plan. Based on this gap a further analysis of the sweep process in actual reservoirs can be done and further activities can be identified to manage their floods optimally. The analytical estimation method is based on the interaction of micro and macro displacement efficiency. The micro displacement is based on an estimation using the Buckley Leverett approach and the macro displacement is derived using a Dykstra-Parson like approach, including estimates of non-flooded part of the reservoir by geological factors or well coverage aspects. The analytical estimation has its limitation like lack of the gravity or capillary effects. However, the gained understanding could lead to further insights and improve field activities. The method is applied in an Excel spreadsheet in combination with VBA, allowing for fast analysis and parameter sensitivity studies. Participants will learn about the theoretical background in the morning session and in the afternoon, participants can apply this knowledge by using the Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is available for use in the participant’s own company. After the completion of this Micro VILT, participants will be able to:
  • Understand how to calculate micro and macro displacement efficiency of flooding techniques
  • Have used an Excel spreadsheet to do specific calculations
  • Use the analytical tool in their own companies

  1. Geology
  2. Well pattern – non-connected layers
  3. Developed area
Module 4: Channel Model
  1. Subdivide flow in individual channels and derive the micro sweep per channel, including the associated pressure drop.
  2. Incorporation of geological heterogeneities by assigning properties to a bundle of channels that represent the reservoir.
  3. Combining micro and macro sweep by tracking flux through each channels assuming the same pressure drop over each channel from injector to producer
  4. Deriving a plot of recovery versus injected volume.
Module 5: Usefulness for
  1. Waterflood in light oil
  2. Waterflood in heavy oil
  3. Polymer injection
  4. Gas injection
