About this Micro Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)

Governments, regulators, and commercial parties are increasingly pursuing CO2 storage opportunities as it becomes increasingly clear that CCS is an important contribution to meet the Paris Agreement targets on Climate Change. For a successful CCS project, various technical, operational, economical and environmental risks and associated stakeholders need to be managed. In three short modulus, the why, what and how of Carbon Capture and Storage projects is outlined. In the first module, the global developments set in motion after previous (Kyoto & Paris) agreements are discussed, while the results of the most recent Conference of Parties in Glasgow (COP26) are outlined. The size of the global challenge is presented by the current and target emissions by mid century, the role of CC(U)S is indicated, some ongoing projects are discussed, and available CC(U)S guidelines introduced. In the second module, an overview of the Carbon Capture and Storage system, with particular attention to the storage facility, the capacity estimation, and the assessment of injectivity and long-term CO2 containment issues in particular. In the third and last module, the key elements of the Storage Permit Application process is presented, aligned with available guidelines and legal requirements adopted in various countries. Management of technical and non-technical risks is pivotal to this approach and builds on the capacity, injectivity and containment discussed on the second module. Furthermore, the Measurement, Monitoring & Verification (MMV) plan and the Corrective Measures plan are crucial elements in the storage permit application process. Training Objectives: Upon completion of this Micro VILT course, participants will be able to:
  1. Develop general awareness of the issues associated with CO2 storage in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. The topics covered are the required topics based on internationally accepted guidelines.
  2. Learn about the type of documents that should be provided as part of a storage permit application and the work required to meet the regulator’s expectations with regards to the content of these documents.
  3. Increase awareness within the organisation on the work required by various technical and non-technical disciplines to apply for a CO2 storage permit.
