About this Classroom Training
The Apollo Root Cause Analysis™ methodology course is a comprehensive 2-day training designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge for effective problem analysis and investigation. This course is particularly beneficial for professionals who regularly encounter incidents or failures that could recur, including those who lead investigations and produce reports.
Participants will delve into the fundamental principles of root cause analysis, learning how to differentiate between symptoms and root causes. The course emphasises practical application, with the second day dedicated to working through real-world scenarios, allowing attendees to apply the concepts learned in a hands-on environment. Key topics include defining problems accurately, understanding cause-and-effect relationships, and utilising the Apollo RCA™ methodology and RealityCharting® software to visualise and analyse data to prevent and eliminate problems from reoccurring.
By the end of the course, participants will be proficient in facilitating investigations, developing actionable solutions, and producing comprehensive reports to support their findings. This course not only enhances individual problem-solving capabilities but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement within organisations. With a focus on collaboration and effective communication, this course prepares professionals to tackle complex issues and drive meaningful change in their workplace.
This course will be delivered via classroom over 2-day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per session. Course Duration: 13 hours in total, 13 CPD points; 1 CEU points.

Learning Approach: This course will provide comprehensive learning resources, including course materials for future reference. Each topic will commence with a clearly defined intended learning outcome (LO). The learning experience will be enriched through diverse activities such as hands on practices, quizzes, and discussion. Besides supplementing the core material, participants will have access to additional resources such as a course manual, a downloadable free copy of Dean Gano’s eBook ‘Seven steps to Effective Problem Solving’ and Memory Jogger (RCA Jogger). Learning Tools: Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop to access RCPro® software. Each participant will get access to the RCPro® software for twelve (12) months duration. RC Pro® facilitates implementation of the Apollo Root Cause Analysis™ methodology and provides comprehensive investigation management features. It gives participants a standardised platform to quickly create, escalate, iterate and integrate your analysis into business processes. This software will be utilised during the hands-on activities for participants to practice.
Your expert instructor, from United Kingdom, boasts an impressive 38-year career in the maintenance and reliability field. He began his journey at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in the UK, where he honed his skills in reliability-centered maintenance and root cause analysis. In 2001, he joined Transfield Worley Limited as a Maintenance Reliability Engineer, where he applied reliability engineering techniques to optimize asset availability and capacity.
In 2003, he advanced to the role of Senior Reliability Engineer at ARMS Reliability in Australia, where he provided instruction in reliability techniques, including Apollo Root Cause Analysis and FMECA studies. He later transitioned to Syngenta UK as a site Reliability Engineer, where he implemented root cause analysis processes to drive reliability improvements. In 2012, he returned to ARMS Reliability as the European Engineering Manager, supporting global customers on reliability projects and leading several high-profile incident investigations. After approximately 15 years in these field, he took on the position of Site Reliability Engineer at Shell Todd Oil Services in Kapuni. During his three years at Kapuni, he developed an optimised maintenance program for all site assets.
Throughout his career, he has delivered training courses on reliability studies and root cause analysis investigations across various industries and regions, showcasing his deep expertise and commitment to continuous improvement in maintenance and reliability engineering. His work spans multiple industry sectors, including oil and gas and chemicals, both in the UK and internationally. Among his notable achievements are resolving safety-related incidents and addressing environmental challenges, such as excessive emissions in Texas and oil tank seal failures in Wisconsin. He also eliminated a premature valve failure on a well site, resulting in savings of $75,000.
He is also the author and co-author of several reliability-focused papers, including “Risk Mitigation through Strategic Maintenance and Reliability” and “Increased Reliability – Effective Problem-Solving using Root Cause Analysis.” His extensive experience underscores his dedication to enhancing reliability and safety in the oil and gas and chemical industries.
