A giant hydrocarbon exploration company currently operates the Forties & Beryl Fields in the UK Sector of the North Sea. These assets are over 40 years old, with the majority of the producing wells over 25 years of age.

A number of Safety Improvement Notices were issued by the oil giant’s HS&E department, highlighting an urgent need for all personnel involved in the design, construction, operation or maintenance of these assets to be well versed in well integrity.

After a discussion with PetroEdge, a bespoke training course was designed to provide the exploration company offshore-based production operations personnel with an understanding of:

  • The principles of Well Integrity
  • Well Integrity as it applied to the company’s Well Stock
  • The role production operations personnel had in ensuring well integrity was maintained and any potential loss of well integrity was promptly identified and acted upon

The course structure covered:

  • Well Integrity Overview
  • Well Construction
  • Completion Types & Components for the exploration company’s Wells (from an integrity perspective)
  • Wellheads & Xmas Trees on the company Wells (from an integrity perspective)
  • Handover from Drilling to Production
  • Well Monitoring by Production Operations Personnel
  • Integrity Testing & Verification
  • Threats to Well Integrity

During the delivery of the course, learning checks were conducted to ensure that all participants had a clear understanding of the topics through group exercises and case study reviews based on well integrity issues that had occurred on the exploration company’s ageing assets.
