About this Classroom Training

As the world works to scale up carbon capture and storage (CCS) capacity, liquid CO2 carriers will play a vital role in safely and reliably transporting captured CO2 from industrial sources to permanent storage locations. Shipping offers a flexible transportation solution for longer distances for lower to medium volumes compared to pipelines. However, the development of a global fleet of CO2 carriers presents several unique challenges. The optimal shipping solution depends on factors like cargo volumes, transport distances, offloading arrangements, and CO2 purity levels. Different applications may require elevated, medium or low-pressure CO2 carriers.

This 3-day training is developed, based on the properties and safe handling of CO2 before moving on to the complexities of LCO2 carrier design, construction, propulsion, cargo systems, and the relevant regulations of LCO2 carriers. Throughout the course, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of LCO2 properties, regulatory frameworks, and the latest engineering practices essential for safe and efficient LCO2 transport. Furthermore, participant will delve into the intricacies of cargo handling systems and safety management, emphasising risk assessment and emergency response protocols.

This course will combine theoretical knowledge with practical applications, featuring lectures, and case studies. Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and understanding the unique challenges associated with LCO2 shipping. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the necessary tools to contribute effectively to the evolving landscape of LCO2.

This course will be delivered via a Classroom Training over 3-day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per session. Course Duration: 24 hours in total, 24 CPD points.

• Examine the critical role of LCO2 carriers in transporting captured CO2 to storage locations, especially over long distances.
• Illustrate and analyse the systems of LCO2 carriers by ship owner and builder requirements, and equipment specifications.
• Understand the importance of building site supervision and challenges in construction, and the significance of inspections and surveys.
• Evaluate propulsion options and analyse different power systems employed in LCO2 carriers.
• Distinguish the design and material selection for efficient LCO2 loading and unloading systems.
• Discover different gas carrier types, IMO ship categories and interpret the regulations and codes applicable to LCO2 ships.
• Analyse cargo tank placements, their impact on safety and justify the design and benefits of Independent Tank Type C3.

• Marine Engineers and Naval Architects involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of LCO2 carriers.
• Project Managers overseeing the entire lifecycle of LCO2 carrier projects, from design and construction to operation and decommissioning.
• Chemical Engineers involve in understanding the thermodynamic and physical properties of CO2, especially in its liquified form.
• Petroleum Engineers responsible in the CCS industry, particularly focusing on the transportation of CO2.
• Shipyard Inspectors overseeing the construction and inspection of LCO2 carriers to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
• Maintenance Engineers role for the upkeep and repair of LCO2 carriers, including cargo handling systems, propulsion systems, and safety equipment.
• Safety Officers and Risk Managers ensuring safety protocols and managing risks in marine environments.
• Cargo Handling Specialists experts in the design and operation of systems used to load, transport, and unload liquified CO2.
• Environmental Compliance Officers who ensure that LCO2 carriers comply with environmental regulations.
• Supply Chain and Logistics Managers managing the transportation and storage of LCO2.
• Shipowners and Operators that operating LCO2 carriers and understanding their complexities.
• Regulatory Authorities personnel from organisations that oversee and enforce maritime regulations and environmental guidelines.
• Environmental Scientists focusing on CCS and the environmental impact of CO2 transportation.
• Consultants and Industry Experts offering advisory services in the maritime and CCS industries.
