About this Training

This course is an intermediate-level training program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in conditioning natural gas and extracting valuable natural gas liquids (NGLs). Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of natural gas, phase behavior, and the various techniques employed to remove water and extract NGLs from raw gas streams.

The course begins by covering the fundamentals of natural gas properties, phase envelopes, and primary liquid separation processes. It then delves into gas dehydration methods, including absorption, refrigeration, and membrane processes, as well as hydrate control strategies. Participants will develop a solid understanding of the reasons for dehydrating gas and the techniques used to achieve desired water content levels.

A significant portion of the course is dedicated to NGL extraction processes, with comprehensive coverage of cooling and refrigeration processes, Joule-Thomson (JT) expansion, and turbo-expansion techniques. Participants will learn about the process schemes, equipment, and operational considerations for each extraction method, enabling them to select and optimize the appropriate approach based on the gas composition and desired recovery levels.

The course also covers NGL stabilization and provides an introduction to distillation processes, which are crucial for meeting product specifications and maximizing the value derived from NGL streams. Additionally, gas sweetening processes, such as absorption and adsorption techniques, are discussed, equipping participants with the knowledge to remove acid gases (CO2 and H2S) and meet pipeline and product specifications. Through interactive sessions, real-world examples, and hands-on exercises, participants will gain practical experience in linking theoretical concepts to industry applications.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate and select appropriate NGL extraction techniques based on factors such as gas composition, desired recovery levels, and economic considerations.
  • Optimize process integration for efficiency across the various processes involved in gas conditioning and NGL extraction.
  • Design and troubleshoot NGL extraction facilities through a detailed understanding of process schemes, equipment, and operational considerations.
  • Understand NGL stabilization and distillation principles enabling them to meet product specifications and maximize the value derived from NGL streams.
  • Link theory to practical applications to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications in gas conditioning and NGL extraction operations.

This course is tailored for upstream professionals involved in natural gas production and early-stage processing. It is ideal for those working with wellhead fluids and field operations who seek to enhance their understanding of gas conditioning and NGL extraction. The course provides valuable insights into the critical processes that bridge production and midstream operations, enabling participants to make more informed decisions about field development, production optimization, and early-stage gas treatment. By understanding these downstream processes, upstream professionals can better anticipate and address challenges in gas quality, improve field planning, and optimize the overall value chain from reservoir to sales point.

Your expert course leader, based in UK, has established himself as an authority in gas processing and conditioning. As the lead process engineer for the $300 million Omar Gas Project in the Middle Eas, he was responsible for the entire process design of the 160 MMscf/d gas plant from concept to detailed engineering, including gas chilling, dehydration, and a two-stage propane refrigeration system for NGL/LPG extraction with 95% butane recovery. He has leveraged process simulation tools extensively, such as modeling Brunei Shell’s entire offshore gas gathering network for debottlenecking. His expertise spans plant conceptualization, comparing technology alternatives like membrane vs cryogenic NGL separation, developing process flow diagrams, sizing key equipment like glycol dehydration units and stabilizer columns, and ensuring robust specifications meet product requirements. His gas conditioning proficiency has been applied across mega-projects globally for supermajors like Shell, BG Group and PETRONAS.
