About this Classroom Training

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are advanced energy management system that aggregates and coordinates the operation of solar panels, wind turbines, battery storage systems, and demand response units. These smaller, decentralised resources are interconnected and managed through a centralised platform, enabling them to function collectively as a single, flexible power plant. VPPs are designed to optimise energy production, balance supply and demand, enhance grid stability, and provide valuable services to energy markets. The operational mechanism of a VPP involves real-time data collection, advanced analytics for optimisation, and dynamic resource dispatching to meet energy demands efficiently. VPPs also integrate seamlessly with existing grid infrastructure and comply with regulatory frameworks at local, national, and international levels.

This 5-day course offers an in-depth exploration of VPPs in the context of current market trends, such as the rising demand for renewable energy and the technological advancements facilitating their integration. Participants will delve into the definition and operational mechanisms of VPPs, their role within generation portfolios, and the associated information technology challenges. This training course will also cover economic valuation methods for VPPs and strategies for building organisations that effectively support these resources. Targeted at utility executives, planners, generation developers, regulators, and professionals in environmental sustainability and legal fields, this course emphasises the interconnectedness of various elements in the energy transition. By understanding these complexities and linkages, participants will be better equipped to make informed decisions that drive successful outcomes in this transformative journey toward a sustainable energy future.

This course will be delivered via face to face over 5-day, comprising of 6 hours 30 minutes per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 32.30 hours in total, 32.30 CPD points.

By the end of this 5 days training course, participants will be able to:

  • Define VPPs, identifying their key characteristics, operational mechanisms, and benefits in modern energy systems.
  • Evaluate the fitness of VPPs within diverse generation portfolios, enhancing grid stability and reliability while supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.
  • Gain insights into the technologies that underpin VPPs and enabling effective coordination and dispatch of resources.
  • Equipped to analyse the costs and benefits associated with implementing VPPs.
  • Explore the regulatory environments that impact VPP operations at local, national, and international levels, understanding compliance requirements and market structures.
  • Identify key roles and skills necessary for managing VPPs effectively.
  • Discussing optimal organisational structures and strategies for team building within the context of energy management.
  • Assess the common challenges faced during VPPs implementation and explore strategies to overcome these barriers for successful operations.
  • Senior Utility Executives responsible for strategic decision-making regarding energy generation and distribution.
  • Energy Planners involve in the planning, development and integrating energy systems with new technologies and resources.
  • Generation Developers engage in the development of new energy generation projects.
  • Regulators responsible for establishing and enforcing regulations that govern energy markets and operations.
  • Environmental and Sustainability Professionals focus on promoting sustainable practices within the energy sector, including reducing carbon footprints and enhancing renewable energy integration.
  • Legal Professionals specialising in energy law, regulatory compliance, and contractual agreements related to VPPs and energy markets.
  • Technology Specialists and engineers involved in the development and implementation of energy management systems, cybersecurity measures, and data analytics for VPP operations.
  • Basic
  • Intermediate

This course will provide comprehensive learning resources, including course materials for future reference. Each topic will begin with a clearly defined intended learning outcome (LO). The learning experience will be enriched through diverse activities, such as quizzes and assessments, to ensure engagement and understanding. In addition to the core material, participants will have access to supplementary resources, including articles, case studies, and tools. The course structure incorporates interactive elements, such as case studies, practical exercises, and Q&A sessions, which provide opportunities for clarification and deeper understanding.

Your expert trainer is a results-driven energy professional based in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a vast experience in electric utility resource planning, power markets, economic analysis, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory processes. He specialises in assisting companies, communities, and countries in transitioning their electrical systems toward more diverse and environmentally sustainable models.

With over a decade at Duke Energy, he held pivotal roles including Director and Managing Director of Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) and Analytics. His leadership in generation resource planning resulted in the development of more than ten Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs), significantly enhancing stakeholder engagement and service territories. During his recent tenure as Managing Director of Integrated Resource Planning from March 2023 to February 2024, he focused on strategic scenario planning and economic modeling to address emerging challenges in the energy sector.  Prior to this, as Managing Director of Midwest Integrated Resource Planning & Analytics (August 2020 – March 2023), he executed numerous IRPs that supported critical resource additions and ensured regulatory compliance. His contributions included expert testimony that positively influenced company earnings.

Earlier in his career at Progress Energy, he successfully led a bid team that secured a $200 million Smart Grid grant and managed long-term energy transactions at Pacific Gas and Electric Company, supporting the development of over 2,140 MW of merchant Combined Cycle projects. His expertise extends to regulatory hearings and due diligence efforts, notably during the divestiture of Duke Energy Indiana to the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Singapore.
