About this Training Course

Microgrids are a critical component of modern power systems, enabling reliable, resilient, and flexible energy delivery through the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). With applications ranging from remote communities to industrial zones, microgrids support decarbonization goals while maintaining operational stability and control across diverse environments.

This 4-day training provides a practical and standards-based approach to advanced microgrid design, modeling, and implementation. Participants will gain hands-on experience with leading simulation tools, review key IEEE and IEC standards, and explore topics such as AI-driven load forecasting, energy management system (EMS) programming, communication protocols, protection strategies, and AC/DC wiring design.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between islanded and grid-tied microgrid configurations and DER typologies
  • Apply regulatory and interconnection standards such as IEEE 1547, IEEE 2030.7/8/10, and IEC codes
  • Use leading software tools (HOMER Pro, ETAP, PowerFactory, OpenDSS, MATLAB/Simulink) for design and modeling
  • Forecast energy growth in underserved areas using AI tools like LSTM, Prophet, and MATLAB
  • Establish load profiles for residential, commercial, and industrial applications, considering demand-side strategies
  • Select and size key equipment including inverters, BESS, controllers, and protection systems
  • Interpret single-line diagrams and design AC vs DC coupling schemes
  • Compare and implement communication protocols including IEC 60870-5, DNP3, Modbus, and UIOT
  • Develop EMS control logic using programming languages such as Python, C, and C++
  • Implement cloud-based EMS functions such as DER dispatch, load prioritization, and black start coordination

This course is designed for professionals involved in the planning, design, and operation of microgrids and distributed energy systems, including:

  • Microgrid and power system engineers
  • Utility planners and distribution network operators
  • Energy project developers and renewable system integrators
  • SCADA, EMS, and automation specialists
  • Energy consultants, researchers, and technical advisors
  • Government agencies and regulators involved in DER standards and rural electrification programmes

This course combines expert-led lectures with hands-on software demonstrations, real-world case studies, and interactive discussions. Emphasis is placed on practical application of standards, design tools, and EMS control strategies. Participants will engage with actual modeling and system design scenarios throughout the training.

Your expert course faculty is a Utility Executive with extensive global experience in power system operation and planning, energy markets, enterprise risk and regulatory oversight. She consults on energy markets integrating renewable resources from planning to operation. She led complex projects in operations and conducted long term planning studies to support planning and operational reliability standards. Specializing in Smart Grids, Operational flexibilities, Renewable generation, Reliability, Financial Engineering, Energy Markets and Power System Integration, she was recently engaged by the Inter-American Development Bank/MHI in Guyana. She was the Operations Expert in the regulatory assessment in Oman. She is a registered member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario, Canada. She is also a contributing member to the IEEE Standards Association, WG Blockchain P2418.5.

With over 25 years with Ontario Power Generation (Revenue $1.2 Billion CAD, I/S 16 GW), she served as Canadian representative in CIGRE, committee member in NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), and Senior Member IEEE and Elsevier since the 90ties. Our key expert chaired international conferences, lectured on several continents, published a book on Reliability and Security of Nuclear Power Plants, contributed to IEEE and PMAPS and published in the Ontario Journal for Public Policy, Canada.
