About this Training

Flow assurance in oil and gas production is critical to ensuring the uninterrupted, safe, and efficient transport of hydrocarbons from the wellhead to processing facilities. This five-day technical training program covers the multidisciplinary approaches required to manage multiphase flow systems, addressing challenges such as slugging, hydrate formation, wax deposition, and frictional losses. Participants will gain a solid understanding of both steady-state and transient phenomena, as well as operational and design strategies to mitigate flow assurance risks.

The course combines theory, practical exercises, and real-world case studies from major offshore and onshore fields, including Ormen Lange, Åsgard, and Zeepipe. Participants will engage with commercial flow assurance simulation software (FlowlineProSS), applying modelling techniques to evaluate operational envelopes, troubleshoot production issues, and validate real-world data. Simulations will be conducted in small groups, enabling collaborative problem-solving and peer learning.

By the end of the program, participants will have developed the skills to interpret PVT data, predict flow challenges, and implement effective mitigation strategies across diverse field environments, from deepwater developments to Arctic and unconventional oilfields. The course emphasizes practical application, critical thinking, and hands-on experience to ensure participants can translate theoretical knowledge into actionable engineering solutions.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse multiphase flow regimes and their impact on production efficiency and safety.
  • Predict and mitigate operational challenges such as slugging, hydrate formation, wax deposition, and erosion.
  • Apply commercial flow assurance simulation tools (FlowlineProSS) to model complex field scenarios and validate results.
  • Develop operational envelopes, troubleshoot real production issues, and design effective mitigation strategies.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary approaches, including chemical, mechanical, and process engineering principles, into practical flow assurance solutions.

This course is designed for engineers and technical professionals responsible for the design, operation, and optimization of hydrocarbon flow systems. Ideal participants include flow assurance engineers, pipeline and subsea engineers, production and operations engineers, well and completions engineers, and mechanical or process engineers. Field operators, supervisors, and technical managers who are involved in troubleshooting and operational planning will also benefit.

Attendees are typically involved in evaluating operational envelopes, managing transient flow phenomena, applying chemical and mechanical mitigation strategies, or using simulation tools to design and optimize production systems.

This course will also benefit engineers transitioning into flow assurance roles or those seeking to strengthen their expertise in multiphase flow, PVT interpretation, and real-world operational challenges.

  • Intermediate

The program combines interactive lectures, hands-on simulation exercises, case studies, and group mini projects to provide both theoretical understanding and practical application. Participants will engage with commercial simulation software, perform manual calculations to validate model results, and analyse real field data. The mix of individual exercises and collaborative projects ensures participants gain applied problem-solving skills, while instructor-led discussions reinforce critical flow assurance concepts and operational strategies.

Q1: What is flow assurance in oil and gas production?
Flow assurance is the discipline focused on ensuring the safe, uninterrupted, and efficient transport of hydrocarbons from wells to processing facilities. It addresses multiphase flow challenges, including slugging, hydrate formation, wax deposition, and pressure surges, using engineering, chemical, and operational strategies.

Q2: Why is multiphase flow important in pipelines?
Multiphase flow involves simultaneous transport of oil, gas, and water. Understanding it is critical because flow regimes impact frictional losses, pressure drops, slug formation, and production efficiency. Proper design and monitoring prevent operational disruptions and costly shutdowns.

Q3: What are common flow assurance challenges?
Typical challenges include hydrate plugs, wax deposition, slugging, sand erosion, corrosion, liquid loading in gas wells, and pressure surges. Each can disrupt production, damage infrastructure, or compromise safety, requiring careful monitoring and mitigation strategies.

Q4: How are hydrates and wax managed in pipelines?
Hydrates are controlled by temperature and pressure management, chemical inhibitors, and pipeline insulation. Wax is mitigated through pigging, heating, chemical treatment, and flow monitoring. Integrated strategies ensure continuous hydrocarbon flow.

Q5: What is slugging and why is it problematic?
Slugging is the intermittent movement of large liquid slugs in gas pipelines, which can cause pressure surges, equipment damage, and flow interruptions. Mitigation involves pipeline design, slug catchers, flow regulation, and simulation-based operational planning.

Q6: Which software tools are used for flow assurance simulation?
Tools like FlowlineProSS, OLGA, and PIPESIM simulate multiphase flow, predict transient behavior, and evaluate operational envelopes. They help engineers optimize design, forecast flow issues, and validate mitigation strategies.

Q7: How does flow assurance contribute to cost efficiency?
By enabling reliable multiphase transport without extensive separation facilities, flow assurance reduces capital and operational costs, minimizes downtime, and extends field life, particularly in challenging offshore or unconventional environments.

Q8: What are emerging trends in flow assurance?
Trends include advanced real-time monitoring, AI-assisted simulation, multiphase metering, corrosion-resistant materials, and optimized chemical and thermal mitigation strategies, enhancing reliability and sustainability of hydrocarbon transport.

Q9: How are transient phenomena analyzed in pipelines?
Transient phenomena, such as pressure surges or flow regime changes, are analyzed using multiphase flow equations, dynamic simulations, and real-time monitoring. Understanding transients is crucial for designing operational envelopes and avoiding pipeline failures.

Q10: What industries require flow assurance expertise?
Flow assurance is critical in upstream oil and gas production, subsea pipelines, LNG transport, offshore and deepwater developments, and unconventional oilfield exploitation. It ensures safe, efficient, and cost-effective hydrocarbon delivery across challenging environments.
