About this Training
This API 653 – Inspection & Repair of Storage Tanks course is designed to provide practical and technical knowledge on the inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction of aboveground storage tanks according to the API 653 standard.
With 60 hours of technical content, the course is intended for engineers, designers, freelancers, technicians, and students involved in the calculation, design, selection, manufacturing, safety, quality, and maintenance of systems and equipment in industrial processes.
The course is delivered 100% online and on-demand, allowing participants to study at their own pace. Instructor support will be provided through the consultation forum on the Virtual Campus. Participants will have 180 days of access to the platform to complete the course.
Course Outline
This module covers the main technical requirements and engineering practices needed to evaluate, inspect, repair, alter, and reconstruct aboveground storage tanks in accordance with API 653.
Participants will learn how to assess the fitness for service of tank roofs, shells, bottoms, and foundations; determine minimum thickness requirements; evaluate settlement according to Appendix B; conduct external, internal, and in-service inspections; perform hydrostatic tests, leak-tightness tests, and non-destructive examinations; and design repairs for tank walls, bottoms, roofs, and shell connections.
The course also addresses tank dismantling and reconstruction, dimensional tolerances, marking, recordkeeping, nameplates, and tank requalification after changes in pressure, temperature, or service conditions.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Apply the API 653 standard in the inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction of storage tanks.
- Assess the fitness for service of a tank’s roof, shell, bottom, and foundation.
- Determine minimum thicknesses and acceptable settlement criteria according to Appendix B.
- Conduct external, internal, and in-service inspections using methods specific to the code.
- Perform hydrostatic tests, leak-tightness tests, and non-destructive examinations in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Design repairs for tank shells, bottoms, and roofs using lap plates and partial replacements.
- Install new connections and modify tank shell height in accordance with API 653 requirements.
- Manage the dismantling and reconstruction process while considering dimensional tolerances.
- Document markings, records, and nameplates after repairs or alterations.
- Requalify tanks modified due to changes in pressure, temperature, or service conditions.
Participants will be equipped with the theoretical and practical knowledge required to evaluate, inspect, repair, alter, and reconstruct aboveground storage tanks according to API 653.
This course is intended for:
