About this Training

This training program provides a practical technical introduction to the selection, configuration, location and basic design of supports for piping systems used in industrial process facilities.

The course is delivered 100% online and on-demand, allowing participants to study at their own pace. Instructor support will be provided through the consultation forum on the Virtual Campus. Participants will have 180 days of access to the platform to complete the course.

Course Outline

This module covers the main technical aspects required to select and configure piping supports according to their function, construction method, connection to the piping system and associated engineering criteria.

Participants will learn how to interpret flexibility and stress isometrics, identify restraint requirements, select rigid and flexible support arrangements, define support locations, evaluate support spacing and perform basic structural checks for support elements.

The course also includes practical case studies, conceptual questions, design and calculation sheets, and lessons learned based on real industrial projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the purpose, function and classification of piping supports
  • Interpret stress and flexibility isometrics and translate restraint requirements into practical support configurations
  • Select appropriate rigid supports, including rests, guides, stops, anchors, hangers, trunnions and pedestals
  • Evaluate the use of variable and constant spring supports in piping systems
  • Define suitable support locations and estimate maximum spans between supports
  • Perform basic structural checks related to support stresses and deformations
  • Apply support symbology and restraint terminology used in engineering documentation
  • Recognise special support arrangements for vibrating systems, cryogenic services, structures and equipment
  • Use practical tools, case studies and calculation sheets to support technical decision-making

This course is intended for:

  • Graduates or soon-to-graduate professionals in engineering or technical disciplines
  • Piping designers and layout professionals involved in industrial projects
  • Mechanical engineers working with piping systems, supports or stress-related documentation
  • Technicians involved in fabrication, installation, maintenance, safety or quality activities
  • Freelancers and professionals seeking practical knowledge of piping support selection and configuration

Prerequisite

Previous knowledge of piping supports is not required. Basic familiarity with industrial piping systems, piping drawings or mechanical equipment will be useful, but the course is structured to introduce the subject progressively from fundamentals to practical applications.

  • Intermediate

The course follows a self-paced “learn by doing” methodology, combining technical explanations with practical exercises, case studies and calculation-based activities. The training is structured around non-scheduled online sessions, allowing participants to progress through the material according to their availability while applying the concepts to realistic piping support scenarios.

Your expert course instructor is a Senior Mechanical Engineer and MBA holder with over 20 years of experience in the design, calculation and fabrication of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, piping systems and general structures.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in the full equipment lifecycle, from initial concept development, drawings, design and calculations, through to technical specifications, technical requisitions, vendor drawing reviews, manufacturing support and installation assistance. His project experience includes work for major international clients such as SHELL, EXXON, REPSOL, CHEVRON, GALP, CEPSA, TUPRAS and SAUDI ARAMCO.

In addition to his technical expertise, he has extensive experience delivering specialist training in both classroom and online formats. He has conducted more than 75 training courses for institutions and in-company programmes, with courses designed for graduates, designers, engineers and experienced professionals.
