Elevating HSE Standards Through Document Clarity
A petroleum operating company in Malaysia responsible for the Kebabangan Cluster fields (130 km offshore Sabah) initiated a major review of its Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in 2010. The goal was to improve document clarity, usability, and alignment with local operational needs—while maintaining alignment with international standards.
Because the company had a participating interest from a UK-based gas and electricity supplier, its existing SOPs were originally derived from that partner’s documentation. To tailor these for the Malaysian context, the company launched a structured technical review process—engaging EnergyEdge for editorial and documentation support.
Our Role
Following internal subject matter expert (SME) reviews of the SOPs, EnergyEdge was engaged to:
- Convert documents into the company’s new HSE SOP format
- Edit content to improve clarity, structure, and readability for frontline personnel
- Proofread finalised versions to ensure consistency and accuracy
- Support ongoing updates, remaining on-call for post-delivery amendments
Phase 1: Initial SOP Review
The first engagement involved five core SOPs. EnergyEdge collaborated closely with internal teams to:
- Interpret technical feedback from SMEs
- Refine the language and layout for operational clarity
- Produce final, workplace-ready versions of each SOP
The success of this initial phase led to further collaboration.
Phase 2: Full SOP Rollout
In early 2011, the petroleum company extended the engagement to include an additional 10 SOPs. The same structured approach was applied—ensuring consistency across all documentation.
This multi-phase effort helped the company deliver a clear, accessible, and standardised set of HSE procedures, supporting safety and compliance for both local and offshore operations.
