High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is fundamentally transforming long-distance power transmission. As an efficient and versatile solution, it is central to the evolution of modern electrical grids. While conventional HVDC systems have a long-established history of interconnecting large asynchronous AC systems, their role has expanded significantly with the global transition to renewable energy. Today, HVDC technology is essential for integrating remote, large-scale clean energy sources, such as offshore wind farms and solar farms, into national grids while minimising transmission losses.

Recent technological breakthroughs have further enhanced the capabilities and applications of HVDC systems. Advancements in Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, have improved system flexibility, enabled black-start capabilities, and facilitated the development of complex multi-terminal networks, thereby increasing overall grid stability and resilience. Concurrently, the power capacity of HVDC links, including DC overhead lines, underground and submarine cables, has grown substantially into the gigawatt (GW) range. South-east Asia, with similar conditions with a mix of generation and geography and policies for the future grid, has the full potentials to gain the same benefits.
