About this Micro Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)

The Guyana-Suriname Basin is today’s hottest basin for hydrocarbon exploration. Since 2015 a string of fifteen discoveries have been made (so far), adding up to a total of some 8 billion barrels of oil reserves. The first discoveries were all made in the deep water of Guyana, however this year the prospective deep water trend proved to continue into Suriname, where a working petroleum system had been proven already much earlier by the onshore Tambaredjo field (in production since 1982). In this Micro VILT, the exploration potential of the Guyana-Suriname Basin will be examined in the context of its basin development, which is related to both the Late Jurassic opening of the Central Atlantic and the oblique Mid Cretaceous opening of the Equatorial Atlantic. The recent discoveries are all related to what can be considered the main proven petroleum system. In addition, there are more speculative other systems, backed-up by recent geochemical analyses. A comparison with the West African Guinea margin is included. The main risks and uncertainties, as well as the critical success factors of several plays will be presented as well.
