About this Training Course
The course provides a comprehensive introduction to the requirements of the current edition of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). It begins with an overview of the background, structure, and organization of the Code, enabling participants to understand how its rules are developed and applied within industry practice.
The course focuses on the design and construction requirements for pressure vessels, covering key areas such as materials, fabrication, inspection, testing, and certification. Participants will gain practical insight into the most used subsections, paragraphs, and appendices, with emphasis on applying “Design by Rules” principles in real-world engineering scenarios.
Through worked examples, participants will learn how to perform calculations for components such as cylindrical shells, heads, nozzles, and flanges under internal and external pressure. The course also addresses topics such as buckling, reinforcement of openings, and fabrication requirements, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of pressure vessel design and compliance with ASME standards.
ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 gives rules for pressure vessel design and construction. It covers fabrication, inspection, testing, and certification. In addition, it uses a Design by Rules approach for common vessel parts. Therefore, many industries use it to support safety and code compliance.
Division 1 uses simpler formulas and higher design margins. By contrast, Division 2 allows more advanced analysis methods. For example, it can include finite element analysis. As a result, engineers often choose Division 1 for standard vessels and Division 2 for complex designs.
Design by Rules uses fixed formulas from the code. Engineers use them to calculate thickness, dimensions, and allowable stress. As a result, the design process becomes simpler. In ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1, this method is widely used.
ASME BPVC Section VIII covers many unfired pressure vessels. For example, it includes separators, heat exchangers, reactors, and storage vessels. It also covers major parts such as shells, heads, nozzles, and flanges.
The code covers forming, welding, heat treatment, and dimensional control. In addition, it sets qualification rules for welders and procedures. As a result, manufacturers can protect vessel strength and reliability under ASME BPVC Section VIII.
Pressure testing checks vessel strength and leak tightness before service. Usually, manufacturers use hydrostatic or pneumatic tests. Therefore, ASME BPVC Section VIII requires this step before operation.
Required documents include design specifications, calculations, material certificates, and inspection records. In addition, manufacturers prepare data reports for certification. Most importantly, the ASME Data Report confirms compliance with ASME BPVC Section VIII.
