About this Training

Primavera P6 Training: Project Planning and Control with Oracle Primavera® is designed to help participants understand the process of planning and controlling projects using Oracle Primavera P6 23.12 (2024) and earlier versions. The course guides learners through the complete project lifecycle, from initial planning to project completion, combining software functionality with practical project management concepts. Participants will gain hands-on experience using Primavera P6 to build, organize, and manage project schedules effectively.

Structured according to project phases, this training introduces the essential tools and methodologies required for successful project planning and control. Participants will learn how to create project calendars, add and organize activities, allocate resources, save project baselines, and manage project data within Primavera P6. The terminology and principles used throughout the course reflect current industrial project management methodologies, ensuring practical relevance across project-driven industries.

Delivered by certified trainer with consulting and engineering backgrounds in project planning and control, the course combines software instruction with practical industry insights. Through a hands-on learning approach, participants will develop both technical confidence in using Oracle Primavera P6 and a stronger understanding of planning and control principles that can be applied directly to real-world project environments.

The VILT course will be delivered online in 5 half-day sessions comprising 4 hours per day, with 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day.

Software Requirements

Participants are required to have Oracle Primavera P6 (minimum version 8.3) installed prior to the course. This may be through an existing company license or an Oracle evaluation/trial installation.

1. What is Oracle Primavera P6 used for?
Oracle Primavera P6 is a project planning and control software used to create, manage, and monitor project schedules. It helps organizations plan project activities, allocate resources, track progress, manage baselines, and analyze project performance. Primavera P6 is widely used for managing complex projects where detailed scheduling and coordination are essential.

2. What are the key benefits of using Primavera P6 for project planning?
Primavera P6 provides structured project scheduling, improved activity organization, better visibility into project timelines, and stronger control over resources and progress. It helps project teams create realistic schedules, monitor deviations, and make informed decisions to keep projects aligned with planned objectives.

3. How does Primavera P6 support project control?
Primavera P6 supports project control by enabling users to establish project baselines, update activity progress, compare planned versus actual performance, and analyze schedule changes over time. These capabilities help teams identify delays, assess impacts, and take corrective actions when necessary.

4. What is a project baseline in Primavera P6?
A project baseline is a saved reference version of a project plan, including schedule, scope, and cost information. It serves as a benchmark against which actual project performance can be measured, helping project managers evaluate progress and identify variances throughout the project lifecycle.

5. What is the difference between project planning and project scheduling in Primavera P6?
Project planning focuses on defining project objectives, activities, resources, and execution strategies, while project scheduling involves arranging those activities within a timeline and establishing dependencies between them. Primavera P6 supports both functions by allowing users to build project structures and manage detailed schedules.

6. Why is resource allocation important in Primavera P6?
Resource allocation helps ensure that labor and other project resources are assigned efficiently to project activities. In Primavera P6, resource management supports capacity planning, workload balancing, and improved project execution by helping teams avoid over-allocation or underutilization.

7. Which industries commonly use Primavera P6?
Primavera P6 is commonly used in industries managing large or complex projects, particularly construction, engineering, infrastructure, and industrial project environments. Its scheduling and control capabilities make it valuable wherever detailed project coordination and progress monitoring are required.

8. What skills are important for effective Primavera P6 users?
Effective Primavera P6 users need a combination of software proficiency and project planning knowledge. Important skills include schedule creation, activity organization, resource allocation, baseline management, progress tracking, and understanding core project management principles.

9. What is the future role of project scheduling software like Primavera P6?
Project scheduling software continues to play an important role in helping organizations manage increasingly complex projects. As projects become more data-driven and interconnected, tools like Primavera P6 remain essential for improving planning accuracy, transparency, collaboration, and project performance monitoring.
