About this Classroom Training

Batteries have grown as a driving technology, powering renewable energy storage system to electrical vehicles. However, the rapid growth in battery usage has led to increasing concerns about their environmental impact. Battery recycling has emerged as a pivotal solution, not only for mitigating environmental harm but also for harnessing substantial economic advantages.   From a global perspective, the purpose of battery recycling extends far beyond simple waste management. It is a critical strategy for securing access to essential raw materials, mitigating the environmental and social impacts of mining, and fostering a circular economy on a global scale.

By recovering valuable resources like lithium, cobalt, and nickel from end-of-life batteries, recycling reduces reliance on environmentally disruptive extraction practices and volatile international markets. Furthermore, it minimises the risk of hazardous materials contaminating ecosystems and promotes responsible waste management in a world grappling with increasing volumes of electronic waste. Ultimately, battery recycling plays a pivotal role in supporting the global transition to sustainable energy systems and ensuring a more equitable and resource-efficient future for all nations.

In this 3-day course, participants will examine the key challenges that hinder effective recycling, from economic hurdles and technological complexities to logistical bottlenecks and evolving regulatory landscapes. Participants will be exploring the cutting-edge technologies, and direct recycling process, and analyse its potential to reclaim valuable resources. Furthermore, participants will able to discuss the importance of designing batteries with recyclability.

This course will be delivered face-to-face over 3-day, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 19.50 hours in total, 19.50 CPD points.

  • Articulate the critical role of battery recycling in sustainable energy management and resource conservation.
  • Identify and apply effective design strategies for incorporating recycled materials back into the manufacturing of new batteries.
  • Evaluate the economic, technological, logistical, and regulatory challenges in battery recycling.
  • Understand international standards and certification requirements for energy storage systems and develop compliance strategies.
  • Analyse the Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS), Return on Investment (ROI), and environmental impacts of energy storage systems.
