About This Training

Using a mix of presentation slides, group exercises and break-out discussions, the course considers the immense task of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions whilst reducing dependence on hydrocarbons in a limited timeframe and whether the reuse of existing oil & gas networks can help in meeting this challenge. The characteristics of CO2 and hydrogen and how they affect transport and storage operations are also discussed. Identifying assets and their associated infrastructure for carbon capture storage (CCS) operations in a mature producing gas region is presented, along with a forecast of corresponding abandonment expenditure (ABEX) liability should the redundant networks be considered unfit for reuse. The challenges of transporting hydrogen in existing natural gas pipelines are addressed, along with the pros and cons of producing hydrogen offshore vs. onshore. The options for the underground storage of hydrogen will also be reviewed. The potential to convert abandoned oil & gas wells for geothermal duty is covered in this course.

The fundamental decision of whether to repurpose or to decommission an asset is debated along with the use of simple screening and comparative tools to rank the increasing number of energy transition project opportunities. Finally, the need for measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) is introduced and the potential conversion of existing wells to monitor future CO2 injection will be discussed.

This course is available in both classroom and Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) format.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how converting oil and gas infrastructure may aid energy transition by lowering CAPEX and shortening project delivery times.
  • Appreciate how the handling and treatment of CO2, hydrogen and heat differs from oil & gas
  • Determine the availability and suitability of infrastructure for re-use
  • Appreciate how converted wells may help potential geothermal development
  • Weigh up whether to abandon or repurpose an oil and gas asset whose producing life has ended
  • Appreciate the requirement for MMV and how reusing mature wells could help

The course has been specifically designed for technical professionals working in energy transition:

  • Sustainability Project Engineers
  • Production Engineers
  • Energy Transition Leaders
  • Regulators, Policymakers & Government Officers
  • Environment specialist
  • Investors and Project Finance advisors
  • Asset Managers
  • Process and Chemical Engineers
  • Engineering Design Engineers
  • Structural and Facilities Engineers
  • Business Development Professionals
  • Decommissioning Engineers

Your expert course leader is a petroleum engineer, who has worked in the oil & gas industry since 1979, gaining broad technical and commercial experience worldwide. He previously worked with British Gas (BG) and Enterprise Oil. He has edited textbooks on formation evaluation and has published more than 20 technical papers. With the ongoing energy transition, he is applying his skill set to the complimentary sectors of geothermal energy development, subsurface carbon storage, and infrastructure re-use, performing studies for the UK Regulator, supervising university student research, and presenting on CCUS issues for technical societies.
