About this training

This course is designed to address the challenges and opportunities associated with the development and production of marginal oil and gas fields. These fields are typically characterized by small reserve sizes, lack of infrastructure, high development costs, and technological constraints, which have prevented their exploitation in the past.

The course aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that influence the commercial viability of marginal fields. It delves into the nature of reserves growth, the evolution of operating practices, and the contribution of emerging technologies in unlocking the potential of these fields. Participants will learn to recognize the reservoir characteristics and production performance indicators that suggest new opportunities, as well as how to unravel limited data and link operator practices to these opportunities.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the unique production and reservoir characteristics that define marginal fields and differentiate them from larger, more developed oil and gas assets.
  • Understand the appropriate application of improved oil recovery (IOR) methods to enhance production and maximize the economic potential of marginal fields.
  • Identify underperforming wells or field areas within marginal assets and recommend targeted interventions to improve their productivity.
  • Determine the “upside potential” of a marginal field by distinguishing between incremental reserves that can be unlocked through improved reservoir management
  • Describe the unconventional methods and approaches that can be employed to effectively develop and produce marginal fields, often requiring innovative thinking to overcome their unique challenges.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the latest technologies and advancements being applied in the development and production of marginal fields

This course is designed for professionals who are involved in the evaluation and exploitation of oil and gas reserves:

  • Reservoir engineers
  • Production engineers
  • Development geoscientists
  • Asset team leaders
  • Acquisition and divestiture managers
  • Other technical personnel
  • Intermediate

Your expert course leader is a well-recognized professional in the E&P industry and has over twenty-five years of experience in marginal field development and operations. He worked on marginal fields in North America (US), Egypt and Oman. He gained international experience during his successful career with Schlumberger and his last role before joining the consultancy firm was the marketing and technical director for Schlumberger Data & Consulting Services for Europe, Caspian and Africa at the HQ in Paris, France.

To further optimise your learning experience from our courses, we also offer individualized “One to One” coaching support for 2 hours post training.
