About this Micro Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)
As the most abundant greenhouse gas in our atmosphere, CO2 levels have risen from a pre industrial baseline of 280 ppm to ~420 ppm leading to a rise in average global temperatures at a rate unprecedented in geological past.
The use of energy represents by far the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities globally. About two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions are linked to burning fossil fuels for energy to be used for heating, electricity, transport and industry. A rapid decarbonization of our energy system has therefore become increasingly urgent, leading to a whole spectrum of activity collectively known as the “Energy Transition”.
This Micro VILT course will cover climate science (do we actually have an issue?), what can be done about it (The energy transition) and what enablers and conditions are required make the transition successful. Given the stark and clear conclusion of the IPCC’s 6th assessment report in the run up to COP26 in Glasgow last year, measures to mitigate climate change will affect all of us as employees as well as consumers. This course will give you the knowledge to understand what is coming and how to respond and be part of the solution.
Training Objectives:
Upon completion of this Micro VILT course, participants will be able to:
- Explain climate science
- Understand the global energy system including supply, demand and CO2 emission forecasts as well as challenges to decarbonising
- Understand key technical aspects such as electrification, renewables, hydrogen, batteries, carbon capture and storage, negative emission solutions

Micro VILT Course Materials:
All participants will receive softcopy course materials (PDF format).
Breakdown of Modules:
Module 1: Climate change. Is it happening and is it an issue?
After an introduction to the course, we will focus on climate and climate science. The role of greenhouse gases, concepts of radiative forcing, climate modelling and carbon budget will be touched upon including the scientific evidence for climate change. Finally, the role of the IPCC, Paris accord and the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be explained.
Module 2: The current energy system, its carbon footprint and decarbonizing
This module characterises the current global energy system including supply, demand and CO2 emission forecasts. The four key energy sectors will be touched upon including their suitability and challenges to decarbonising. The required transition pathway(s) to a net zero carbon system will be presented.
Module 3: Technology, challenges and economics
The final module will look at further technical aspects such as electrification, renewables, hydrogen, batteries, carbon capture and storage, negative emission solutions. The role of carbon pricing, emissions trading, social-economic constraints and policy/regulatory collaboration will be touched on.
