About this Training Course
As governments and utilities accelerate the transition towards low-carbon, secure, and resilient energy systems, nuclear power is experiencing a global resurgence. Driven by increasing electricity demand, decarbonisation commitments, energy security concerns, and the deployment of advanced technologies, countries worldwide are investing in new nuclear power programmes and extending the operational life of existing plants. These developments have created a growing demand for project management professionals capable of delivering complex nuclear projects, safely, efficiently, and in compliance with stringent regulatory requirements.
This 5-day comprehensive training is designed to demonstrate how conventional project management principles must be expanded to address the unique technical, regulatory, safety, and governance requirements of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) projects. Unlike conventional Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) infrastructure projects, nuclear projects operate within a highly regulated environment where safety culture, quality assurance, licensing, stakeholder engagement, security, safeguards, and lifecycle management are fundamental to successful project delivery. Participants will gain a clear understanding of what distinguishes nuclear projects, why specialised management approaches are essential, and how nuclear-specific requirements integrate with established project management methodologies.
Building upon participants’ existing project management knowledge and experience, the programme explores the complete lifecycle of a NPP project from project initiation and planning through licensing, design, construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning. Through practical case studies, interactive workshops, and hands-on exercises, participants will develop key project management deliverables, including a Nuclear Project Charter, Project Management/Execution Plan, and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). By combining internationally recognised project management practices with nuclear industry best practices, the participants will be able to successfully plan, manage, and deliver nuclear power projects in today’s rapidly evolving global energy landscape.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand why and how nuclear projects are different to conventional Architectural Engineering Construction (AEC) projects
- Inform their client as to the additional requirements for a nuclear project
- Engage with the various stakeholders unique to a nuclear project
- Set-up and deliver a Project Plan which addresses also the unique nuclear aspects
- Prepare the necessary project management systems to address the unique nuclear aspects
- Identify the additional distinctive resources required for a nuclear project
- Manage the execution of a nuclear project including the unique reporting, inspections, approvals and assurances required for a nuclear project
- Project Managers (First-Time and Experienced Nuclear PMs) managing scope, schedules, budgets, risks, quality, stakeholders, compliance, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Owners and Customers of New Nuclear Build Projects representing clients throughout the nuclear project lifecycle.
- Engineers designing, analysing, reviewing, and implementing civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, structural, and systems engineering solutions.
- Regulators and Licensing Authorities enforcing nuclear requirements for site selection, design, construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning.
- Nuclear Owner and Operator Organisations overseeing safe and efficient facility development, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and long-term performance.
- NPP Licensing Specialists preparing and managing nuclear licensing documentation and submissions.
- Main Construction Contractors executing nuclear construction activities.
- Architect-Engineering Organisations ensuring compliance with nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and quality management systems.
- Commissioning Staff planning and executing activities to verify safe, design-compliant performance of plant systems, structures, and components.
- Engineering and Construction Consultants supporting nuclear project planning, design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
- Planners and Schedulers tracking progress, analysing critical paths, forecasting delays, assessing schedule risks, and ensuring timely project delivery.
- Equipment Vendor Organisations ensuring products meet nuclear safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
Prerequisite:
Participants should understand conventional project management principles, involvement in engineering, construction, or infrastructure projects. Prior knowledge or experience in the nuclear industry is not required.
- Basic
- Intermediate
This course is delivered through an engaging instructor-led classroom format that combines comprehensive presentation slides, videos, and detailed presentation notes with interactive learning activities. Participants will benefit from in-person lectures, facilitated discussions, group and individual presentations, and practical exercises designed to reinforce key concepts and encourage the application of nuclear project management principles to real-world scenarios. Throughout the programme, participants will progressively develop practical project management documentation, culminating in a portfolio of deliverables that includes a Project Charter for a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project, a Project Management/Execution Plan for an NPP project of their choice, and a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) tailored to the same project. These practical outputs are developed through guided workshops and case studies, enabling participants to apply the knowledge gained during the course. To evaluate learning outcomes and assess participants’ understanding of Nuclear Power Plant project management principles, methodologies, and best practices, an open-book quiz/test will be conducted at the end of the programme. This blended learning approach ensures participants leave the course with both a solid theoretical foundation and practical tools that can be readily applied to future nuclear projects.

Nuclear Power Plant Project Management covers the planning, delivery, and control of nuclear power projects. It combines standard project methods with strict nuclear safety and quality rules. It also covers licensing, site security, risk management, and stakeholder coordination. Project teams use these methods to manage costs, schedules, and resources throughout the plant's lifecycle.
Unlike regular construction, Nuclear Power Plant Project Management requires stricter safety rules and regulatory oversight. Projects need detailed records, inspections, and approvals at key stages. Teams must also follow national nuclear laws and relevant International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safety standards. These extra requirements help control risks but can increase project costs and delivery times.
Nuclear power plants provide reliable electricity with low carbon emissions during operation. They also support energy security and help meet growing power demand. However, nuclear projects require high upfront investment, long construction periods, and complex licensing. Other challenges include radioactive waste management, plant security, and future decommissioning costs.
A nuclear power plant project begins with early planning, site studies, and project development. Key stages then include licensing, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. Once approved for operation, the plant enters its operating phase. Long-term plans also cover maintenance, radioactive waste management, and decommissioning. A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) helps teams organise tasks and track progress across these stages.
Major challenges include cost overruns, construction delays, licensing requirements, and design changes. Nuclear projects also depend on skilled workers and reliable suppliers. Each stage requires strict quality checks, detailed records, and close coordination between contractors and regulators. Early risk planning, regular inspections, and effective project controls help teams identify problems and reduce delays.
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) could change how nuclear power plants are designed and built. For example, factory-built modules may reduce on-site construction work and improve project schedules. However, advanced reactor projects still face licensing, funding, and supply chain challenges. In addition, project teams may need new plans for transport, site assembly, and testing. Therefore, strong project controls and nuclear safety standards will remain essential.
