About this Training Course
This three-day programme provides a practical understanding of the requirements and application of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section I – Rules for Construction of Power Boilers. The course introduces the structure, scope and applicability of Section I, including its relationship with related requirements such as ASME BPVC Sections II, V and IX, and ASME B31.1 Power Piping. The programme focuses on helping engineers understand Code responsibilities, boundaries and interfaces throughout boiler engineering and project execution.
Participants will explore key Section I requirements related to boiler scope, boiler proper and boiler external piping boundaries, materials, allowable stresses, design conditions, pressure-part requirements, openings and nozzle reinforcement, and overpressure protection. Through simplified engineering calculations and practical case studies, participants will develop an understanding of how Section I requirements are applied in typical boiler project situations, including design reviews, vendor document reviews and technical coordination.
The programme further covers fabrication, welding documentation, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), non-destructive examination (NDE), hydrostatic testing, quality control, certification documentation and manufacturing record review. The courses use guided Code navigation, representative technical documents, engineering examples and case studies to enable Project Engineers, mechanical engineers and technical personnel to effectively understand, review and coordinate ASME Section I-related requirements. This programme is an independent technical training course and does not constitute an ASME certification programme or confer any ASME-authorized status.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the structure, scope and applicability of ASME BPVC Section I, including its relationship with Sections II, V, IX and ASME B31.1, and understand the responsibilities of key stakeholders involved in boiler projects
- Identify Section I code boundaries and interfaces, including boiler proper, boiler external piping, boundary components and the transition between boiler requirements and other applicable piping requirements
- Understand the fundamental design requirements of Section I, including design conditions, allowable stresses, minimum required thickness, MAWP, nozzle reinforcement considerations and pressure-relief requirement
- Understand fabrication, examination and testing requirements, including welding documentation, qualification requirements, PWHT, NDE, hydrostatic testing and quality-control documentation
- Review typical boiler project documentation and identify compliance issues, including material traceability records, vendor documentation, inspection records, Manufacturer’s Data Reports and manufacturing records
This course is designed for professionals involved in the engineering, fabrication, inspection and project execution of power boiler systems, including:
- Mechanical Engineers
- Project Engineers
- Boiler Engineers
- EPC Engineers
- QA/QC Engineers
- Inspection Engineers
- Boiler Manufacturer and Fabrication Personnel
- Engineering and Technical Personnel involved in boiler package projects
*Participants should have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles, pressure equipment or boiler systems to gain maximum benefit from the programme
- Basic
- Intermediate
The programme combines structured Code explanation with practical engineering application to support participants in understanding and applying ASME BPVC Section I requirements in real project environments.
The training methodology includes:
- Structured explanation of ASME BPVC Section I requirements, including Code structure, applicability, responsibilities and key compliance considerations
- Guided Code navigation to help participants understand how Section I requirements relate to materials, welding, examination and piping requirements
- Simplified engineering diagrams and examples to illustrate boiler boundaries, pressure parts, piping interfaces and fabrication requirements
- Representative technical document reviews, including material documentation, welding records, inspection records, hydrostatic test documentation and Manufacturer’s Data Reports
- Worked engineering calculations, including representative examples covering thickness requirements, MAWP determination, nozzle reinforcement considerations, pressure-relief relationships and hydrostatic testing
- Integrated case studies based on representative industry situations, focusing on boiler code boundaries, design review and manufacturing record review
- Technical discussions and practical examples to highlight common project interfaces between owners, EPC contractors, vendors, inspectors and engineering disciplines
The emphasis of the programme is on enabling participants to understand, review and coordinate ASME Section I requirements within boiler projects rather than training participants as specialist boiler designers or ASME authorised personnel.

ASME BPVC Section I defines the rules for constructing power boilers. It covers design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing, and certification. As a result, engineers can improve compliance and reduce project risk. The code also supports safe and reliable boiler operation.
ASME Section I applies to power boilers. However, engineers often use it alongside other ASME codes. For example, Section II covers materials. Section V addresses examination methods. Section IX governs welding qualifications. The course also explains the interface with ASME B31.1 Power Piping.
The course explains the practical application of ASME Section I. Participants study boiler boundaries, material requirements, allowable stresses, and MAWP calculations. In addition, they learn about nozzle reinforcement and pressure-relief systems. The programme also covers welding, PWHT, NDE, hydrostatic testing, quality control, and certification. Case studies and calculations support learning.
Yes. Participants review common boiler engineering documents. These include thickness calculations, MAWP assessments, nozzle reinforcement reviews, and material traceability records. They also examine Manufacturer's Data Reports. Consequently, engineers can review vendor submissions with greater confidence.
Yes. The training explains key fabrication and quality-control requirements. Participants learn about WPS, PQR, and welder qualifications. Furthermore, the course covers PWHT, visual inspection, NDE, and hydrostatic testing. It also explains certification records and inspection documentation.
The course suits professionals involved in boiler engineering and project execution. This includes Mechanical Engineers, Project Engineers, Inspection Engineers, and Boiler Engineers. QA/QC personnel and EPC engineers will also benefit. In addition, technical staff who review boiler documentation can gain practical knowledge.
No. This course provides practical knowledge of ASME BPVC Section I requirements. However, it does not grant ASME certification. It also does not qualify participants as Authorized Inspectors or ASME Certificate Holders. Instead, the programme focuses on compliance, documentation review, and project coordination.
