About this Classroom Training
Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) is crucial for addressing the growing challenges of energy transition. The rising use of variable renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, lead to grid instability, supply-demand imbalances, and the need for effective peak load management. Traditional energy sources raise environmental and economic concerns, underscoring the importance of adopting renewable energy and energy storage solutions.
This 4 day course directly addresses these challenges by offering a thorough understanding of PHES, covering basic design principles to practical implementation and commercial viability. Participants will delve into key topics, including site selection, design of civil structures and electromechanical equipment, environmental impact reduction, and operational optimisation. The course also provides guidance on cost analysis, tariff models, and emerging technologies, such as variable speed pumped storage. Through case studies, interactive sessions, and hands-on exercises, attendees will learn to calculate storage capacity, evaluate power generation potential, and manage risks effectively.
By the end of the course, participants will be well-prepared to evaluate, design, implement, and optimise PHES projects, playing a vital role in creating a reliable and sustainable energy future. Additionally, they will gain valuable insights into the latest technological advancements and capacity planning strategies, positioning them to excel in this rapidly evolving field.
This course will be delivered face-to-face over 4 day, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 26 hours in total, 26 CPD points.
By the end of this 4 days training course, participants will be able to:
- Gain a foundational understanding of PHES options.
- Accelerate the ability to evaluate project feasibility and engage in informed discussions.
- Identify key evaluation parameters for site selection.
- Apply preliminary assessment tools for site identification.
- Determine electromechanical equipment specifications.
- Analyse cost factors and assess environmental impacts.
- Describe operation and maintenance procedures.
- Implement maintenance schedules and discuss strategies to optimise performance and efficiency.
- Maximise the technologies for improvements and optimisation.
This course is relevant for professionals in the power generation and energy sector particularly those involve in design, operations, maintenance, and optimisation.
