About this Training Course

The reliability of a plant or facility determines its performance – safety, the environment and costs all depend on it. It is thus a pivotal driver, which we can use to make significant business gains. Unfortunately, it is often seen as a black art, best left to mathematicians or other specialists. This 3 full-day practical course will explain how to use data from operating and maintenance records and get the results you need to achieve your objectives.

This course can also be offered through Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) format.

By attending this course, the participants will acquire the following:

  • Learn reliability terms, their definitions and its applications in the process industry
  • Practice exercises to determine e.g. MTBF, MTTR, Scale and Shape factors, and learn how to use them to determine maintenance strategies and operating philosophies
  • Find out how plant availability depends on reliability and see how configuration affects the outcome
  • Study different failure distributions and see why they matter, exercises on spares holdings will show to optimize and meet service level and cost considerations

This course is suitable for Engineers from industries including Oil & Gas (Upstream and Downstream), Power Generation, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Manufacturing can apply the learning to their advantage. They can be from Production, Maintenance, Projects, Design and Inventory Management teams. For optimal results, a University degree in Science or Engineering is desirable, as some mathematical background knowledge is necessary. Managers, supervisors or support staffs from different disciplines are all suitable.

Your expert course leader is a Maintenance and Reliability specialist with advanced expertise in developing and implementing Reliability Improvement Programs, Maintenance & Integrity Optimisation, Maintenance Backlog Reduction and Operations Excellence. He has 20 years of experience working for Shell in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, four years with BP in the UK & Norway, and 5 years with ARAMCO in KSA. A Certified Reliability Leader with a Masters Degree in Reliability Engineering, he complements this professional knowledge with a positive and enthusiastic approach that motivates and stretches trainees on his courses.

Practical Work Experience: Reliability & Maintenance Manager, Shell International Managed, coached and lead multi-discipline teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrument, Inspection & SCADA) for Shell European EP Facilities to drive up Equipment Availability, while assuring Technical Integrity at Optimal Cost. Drove TR-MIE (Total Reliability, Maintenance Integrity Execution) and ORIP (Operational Reliability Improvement) for OSO (Oil South Operations) in Oman.  Successfully achieved and sustained ‘Calculative’ for TR-MIE and ORIP for the Marmul Facility, (one of only two Shell facilities worldwide). Maintenance & Integrity Lead during evaluation of selected ventures, projects and farm-ins. Introduced Lean Processes to eliminate non-value adding activities and Visual Management to improve visibility and communication. Mentored new GDP (Graduate Development Program) Engineers for Reliability & Maintenance, Operations Readiness & Assurance, Integrated Activity Planning & HSSE Risk Management.  Presented to Technical Steering Committees (Shell) and Joint Venture partners (external) on RAM Assurance, Reliability Improvement and Maintenance Optimisation.

Reliability & Maintenance Lead, Shell UK Exploration and Production Responsible for providing expertise in reliability engineering and maintenance strategy to new projects.  Was a founding member of the Shell R&M ‘Centre of Excellence’ team, responsible for providing expertise in reliability engineering and maintenance strategy to greenfield and brownfield projects.  Co-developed Maintenance Strategy Review (MSR) procedure to establish risk-based maintenance strategies using Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and Operations in Projects (OIP) standard, integrating operations, safety and project design.  Implementation of these standards made major performance improvements to 22 Shell Expro installations in the North Sea. PM and Shell Representative to OREDA (Offshore Reliability Database) Steering Committee (long term International JIP on reliability of E&P process and safeguarding equipment). Managed the creation of a comprehensive Reliability Database, using failure records from 15 Offshore Platforms over a 17-year period and applying Weibull analysis. It includes a Relief Valve Database analysing some 14,000 test bench records, as well as one for Gas, Heat and Smoke Detectors. Was a regular lecturer in RCM at the Shell Training Centre in Holland, conducting 14 sessions over an 8-year period.

Provided Reliability Engineering Support to BP (Dyce) with the primary responsibility of visibly improving the reliability of the SNS (Southern North Sea) producing assets, comprising 17 offshore installations (15 NUIs + 2 Manned).  Lead Defect Elimination Teams and conducted Incident Investigations to eliminate root cause of failures.  In addition, conducted Vulnerabilities Review to determine low probability, high consequence events (sleeping tigers), foreseeable but not visible.

Senior Program Development Analyst, ARAMCO (Arabian American Oil Company), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  Developed and taught reliability and maintenance training courses for ARAMCO Gas Oil Separator Plants (GOSPs).  Performed task analyses and designed programs of instruction, including support media.  Responsible for the practical and theoretical instruction of Saudi Arabian Nationals employed in ARAMCO plants.

Your expert course leader has published many articles and presented papers at International Conferences. He has worked in the upstream and downstream Oil and Gas Industry Sectors, Engineering, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries. He has also worked in several countries and cultures, including Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Korea, USA and the United Kingdom. He is currently on the faculty of Shell Open University and Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, for their MSc Programme in Reliability and Safety Management.
