About this Training
This Introduction to Rare Earth Mining and Processing Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) provides a structured foundation for understanding the full rare earth value chain—from geological formation and exploration through to mining, processing, extraction, and sustainability considerations. The course is designed to bridge technical concepts with practical industry applications, enabling participants to understand how rare earth elements are discovered, evaluated, and transformed into economically viable products that support modern technologies.
Delivered over three interactive half-day online sessions, the programme combines expert presentations, real-world case studies, and guided exercises to reinforce learning. Participants will explore key deposit types such as hard rock, placer, weathering-related, and unconventional sources, while also gaining insight into resource estimation, mining methods, and mineral processing techniques. Case studies, including operations such as Mt Weld Rare Earth Mine, Western Australia, are integrated to connect theory with real-world industry practice.
The course also places strong emphasis on sustainability and ESG considerations, including environmental impact management, tailings handling, radiological aspects, and mine closure planning. By the end of the training, participants will not only understand how rare earth projects are developed and operated, but also how sustainability and responsible resource development are increasingly shaping the industry’s future.
- Understand what rare earth elements are and their industrial significance in modern technologies.
- Explain the geological formation and classification of different rare earth deposit types.
- Describe exploration approaches and resource/reserve estimation for rare earth projects.
- Understand mining, beneficiation, extraction, and refining processes across the rare earth value chain.
- Evaluate sustainability challenges, including environmental impacts, ESG requirements, and mine closure practices.
This course is designed for professionals seeking a foundational understanding of the rare earth mining sector, particularly those who do not require deep technical specialization but need strong industry awareness. It is suitable for:
- New hires and mining graduates
- Non-technical professionals in mining and resource companies
- Industry suppliers, vendors, and sales professionals
- Investors, analysts, and financial stakeholders
- Government officials and regulatory personnel
- Technical professionals in geology, mining engineering, metallurgy, processing, and related disciplines seeking cross-functional knowledge
- Basic
The course is led by a highly experienced expert instructor with over 35 years of global experience in mining and mineral resource projects across Australia, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe. He has worked extensively on rare earth projects throughout his career, combining industry practice with academic leadership in mineral resources and sustainable mining development.
He is a professor at a leading European mining school and is ranked among the top 1% most influential scientists in his field. His career includes academic appointments in Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as recognition through prestigious awards such as a Humboldt Research Fellowship, Erasmus Mundus Fellowship, and Australian Government science communication honors. He holds a PhD in rare earth ore deposit geology and has authored more than 300 publications and textbooks widely used in academia and industry, including in high-level legal and technical proceedings.
