About this Training Course

The increasing digitalisation of power transmission systems has significantly enhanced operational efficiency, situational awareness, and grid reliability. However, the convergence of Operational Technology (OT), Industrial Control Systems (ICS), SCADA platforms, substation automation systems, and enterprise networks has also expanded the cyber threat landscape facing transmission operators.

This comprehensive 5-day program examines the unique cybersecurity challenges associated with power transmission environments. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of OT architectures, Energy Management Systems (EMS), substation automation, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), protective relays, and the communication networks that support modern grid operations.

This course will also introduce risk-based and consequence-focused approach to cybersecurity, emphasising Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) principles that integrate security directly into the design, operation, and maintenance of cyber-physical systems. Participants will learn how to identify and mitigate threats that could impact system reliability, operational continuity, safety, and regulatory compliance. Cyber-Informed Engineering promotes consequence-focused design, engineering controls, resilience, least-privilege access, secure information flow, and the integration of cyber risk into engineering decision-making.

Through real-world case studies, workshops, tabletop exercises, and a comprehensive capstone simulation, participants will develop the skills necessary to evaluate cyber risks, strengthen transmission control environments, respond effectively to cyber incidents, and improve overall grid resilience. Participants will be able to examine industry frameworks and regulatory guidance, including IEC 62443, NIST cybersecurity practices, and other utility-sector security approaches referenced within the Cyber-Informed Engineering framework.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand transmission-specific OT and ICS architectures.
  • Identify cyber threats to power transmission operations.
  • Apply Cyber-Informed Engineering principles to reduce operational risk.
  • Design secure OT network architectures.
  • Develop incident response and recovery plans for utility environments.
  • Improve operational resilience against sophisticated cyber threats.
  • Transmission Engineers responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, reliability and technical improvement of high-voltage transmission networks, substations and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • SCADA Engineers accountable for the design, configuration, integration, maintenance and security of SCADA systems, RTUs, control-centre systems and communications supporting transmission operations.
  • Control Systems Engineers involving in the design, integration, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle management of EMS, substation automation, PLCs, IEDs, protective relays and other industrial control systems.
  • Cybersecurity Specialists protecting operational technology and industrial control environments through risk assessment, vulnerability management, network security, monitoring, access control, threat detection and incident response.
  • Grid operators for monitoring and control of real-time transmission networks, managing system conditions, responding to disturbances and maintaining safe, reliable and continuous grid operations.
  • Reliability & Compliance Personnel ensuring transmission operations comply with applicable cybersecurity, reliability, regulatory and industry requirements, including conducting assessments, audits, gap analysis and compliance activities.
  • Utility managers controlling transmission operations, OT, cybersecurity, engineering or reliability functions, including team leadership, risk management, governance, resource allocation, resilience planning and executive decision-making.
  • Basic
  • Intermediate

This training programme adopts a practical, interactive and scenario-based learning approach, combining instructor-led presentations with real-world case studies, hands-on laboratory activities, technical workshops, group discussions and practical exercises. Participants will apply cybersecurity concepts to electric transmission environments through activities such as SCADA data-flow analysis, secure OT network design, protocol security assessment, OT access-control modelling, compliance gap assessment and cybersecurity risk-register development. Scenario-based and tabletop exercises will allow participants to practise responding to transmission cyber incidents, including control-centre compromise, substation disruption and operational decision-making. The programme concludes with a comprehensive capstone simulation, where participants apply the knowledge gained to incident response, recovery planning, resilience improvement and executive reporting.

1. What is Process Control Cybersecurity for Power Transmission Systems?

Process Control Cybersecurity for Power Transmission Systems protects the digital systems that control electricity networks. These include SCADA, Energy Management Systems (EMS), and protective relays. Its main goal is to prevent cyberattacks and maintain grid reliability. As a result, utilities can reduce operational risks and improve electricity supply security.

2. How does OT cybersecurity differ from IT cybersecurity in power transmission?

IT cybersecurity focuses on protecting business data and computer networks. In contrast, Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity protects physical equipment and real-time grid operations. For example, OT security helps prevent unauthorised control of substations and protective relays. However, security updates must avoid interrupting essential power operations.

3. What are the main cybersecurity threats to power transmission systems?

Common cybersecurity threats include ransomware, insider attacks, unsafe remote access, and supply chain risks. For example, attackers may target SCADA systems to send false data or unauthorised commands. Consequently, these attacks can disrupt grid operations and create safety risks. Therefore, utilities need strong monitoring, access controls, and incident response plans.

4. What are the benefits and challenges of cybersecurity in power transmission systems?

Process Control Cybersecurity for Power Transmission Systems helps improve grid reliability and reduce cyber risks. For instance, network segmentation and secure access can limit unauthorised activity. Additionally, continuous monitoring helps utilities detect threats earlier. However, older equipment and limited maintenance windows can make security upgrades difficult.

5. What is Cyber-Informed Engineering, and how does it improve power grid security?

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) integrates cybersecurity into power system design and operations. Unlike traditional approaches, it also aims to limit damage when attacks succeed. For example, backup communications and manual controls can maintain essential functions during disruptions. As a result, utilities can improve grid resilience and recovery planning.

6. What is the future of cybersecurity in smart grids and power transmission networks?

Smart grids, artificial intelligence (AI), and connected devices are changing power transmission cybersecurity. While these technologies improve monitoring, they also introduce new security risks. Therefore, utilities must strengthen OT monitoring, supply chain security, and threat detection. Furthermore, Process Control Cybersecurity for Power Transmission Systems will become increasingly important as grid networks become more connected.
