About this Classroom Training

High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is fundamentally transforming long-distance power transmission. As an efficient and versatile solution, it is central to the evolution of modern electrical grids. While conventional HVDC systems have a long-established history of interconnecting large asynchronous AC systems, their role has expanded significantly with the global transition to renewable energy. Today, HVDC technology is essential for integrating remote, large-scale clean energy sources, such as offshore wind farms and solar farms, into national grids while minimising transmission losses.

Recent technological breakthroughs have further enhanced the capabilities and applications of HVDC systems. Advancements in Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, have improved system flexibility, enabled black-start capabilities, and facilitated the development of complex multi-terminal networks, thereby increasing overall grid stability and resilience. Concurrently, the power capacity of HVDC links, including DC overhead lines, underground and submarine cables, has grown substantially into the gigawatt (GW) range. The strategic combination of advanced HVDC converters with the appropriate transmission medium constitutes a complete and optimised HVDC link. These innovations are critical enablers for the development of smart grids and robust cross-border interconnections that support regional energy trading and enhance supply security.

The outlook for HVDC technology is one of significant expansion.  Europe has accelerated the introduction of new HVDC links to strengthen the entire electric grid with the ultimate goal to create a sustainable and cost-effective power supply, literally across land and waters. South-east Asia, with similar conditions with a mix of generation and geography and policies for the future grid, has the full potentials to gain the same benefits. Industry analyses consistently forecast a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the sector through the next decade. To address the demands of this growing field, this comprehensive 3-day course offers an in-depth exploration of advanced HVDC systems. Mastering this technology will empower professionals to design and build the sustainable and resilient power networks that are vital for a worldwide energy future.

This course will be delivered face-to-face over 3-full day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 19.50 hours in total, 19.50 CPD points.

By the end of this 3 days training course, participants will be able to:

  • Comprehend the fundamental concepts and advantages of HVDC technology, in conjunction with AC-systems.
  • Compare HVDC converter types and system topologies.
  • Identify and describe the main components of HVDC systems, for the converters and the appropriate transfer media for land and sea (OHL and cable systems).
  • Outline the project management process in complete HVDC projects including OHL and cable systems.
  • Illustrate HVDC system operation, control, and maintenance strategies.
  • Explore real-world HVDC projects for different applications and future developments in HVDC technology.
  • Transmission Engineers responsible for the planning, development, and optimisation of electrical transmission systems.
  • Project Managers (Power & Energy Sector) managing timelines, budgets, contracts, and coordination across multiple teams during power infrastructure projects including converter stations and land/sea cable systems.
  • System Planners analysing current and future electricity demand, grid stability, and system integration planning.
  • Design Engineers developing engineering specifications, layouts, and blueprints for substations, converter stations, and grid infrastructure.
  • Power System Consultants providing expert advice to government agencies, utilities, and developers on grid solutions strategies.
  • Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Personnel Maintaining performance and availability of grid assets, ensuring minimal outages and efficient repair processes.
  • Engineers responsible for HVDC/FACTS/HV Cable Systems focusing on specific high-voltage technologies to enhance grid flexibility, stability, and power quality.
  • Renewable Energy Integration Engineers working on the design and support grid integration of solar, wind, and other renewable sources.
  • Basic
  • Intermediate
