Monitoring Geologic CO2 Storage Sites – Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)

By the end of this Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) course, the participants will be able to:

• Describe why, how, and where monitoring is done
• Delineate the different monitoring challenges of the various reservoir types (saline, depleted fields, EOR)
• Outline the different goals and strategies for monitoring over the lifecycle of a project and within the different zones of a project area
• Understand the elements of a permit and the various strategies for fulfilling regulatory requirements
• Use risk assessment to aid in choosing monitoring strategies using an ALPMI method
• Design a workflow and perform the key tasks for defining, developing and permitting a CCUS project, beginning with characterization, risk assessment, and monitoring for operational and post-operational phases

This VILT course is aimed at project developers, regulators, subsurface Oil and Gas professionals who are familiar with CCUS as a technology and would like to further develop their skills for CO₂ storage project development. It is recommended specifically for:

• Geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers and other technical subsurface professionals working in CCS who are interested in CO₂ storage monitoring
• Consultants in related fields who want to understand the nuances of CO₂ storage monitoring
• Professionals developing geologic storage for CCUS projects
• Recent graduates in petroleum geoscience and reservoir engineering who want to develop skills in CCUS monitoring

The VILT course will be delivered online in 3 half-day sessions comprising 4 hours per day, with 2 breaks of 10 minutes per day. Course Duration: 3 Half-Day Sessions, 4 Hours Per Session (12 Hours in total).

Your first expert course leader is a Senior Research Scientist at the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on the assessment of the effectiveness of subsurface geologic storage of CO₂ to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions. She is the principle investigator of the Gulf Coast Carbon Center (www.gulfcoastcarbon.org), an industry / academic partnership that has been developing economically viable approaches to geologic CO₂ sequestration since 1992. She was the project lead on the Frio I & II CO₂ injection Pilots – the first highly monitored CO₂ injection field experiment in the world which validated modelling approaches and monitoring techniques. Subsequent field projects included 6 major (> 1 MMT CO₂) field injection projects. In 2019, she won the Greenman Award from the Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT) Conference, recognizing individuals who had made a significant contribution to the field of CO₂ removal, storage, and utilization.

Your second expert course leader is a Research Scientist at the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin. She is a geochemist who has developed and implemented environmental monitoring programs at several large-scale U.S. Department of Energy CCUS project sites. She led a response team of scientists to assess alleged leakage at the Kerr Farm near the Weyburn CO2 Storage project in Canada. She has collaborated on international projects in Canada, Australia, Japan and Norway and has developed an innovative method for environmental monitoring to satisfy regulatory environmental requirements for CCUS projects. She serves on multiple international CCUS Advisory boards and regularly informs global policy within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
