Document Consolidation and Project Reporting for Kinabalu Redevelopment

An upstream oil and gas company in Malaysia operates across two major locations in the South China Sea: the Kinabalu field off the coast of Sabah and the PM-3 area between Malaysia and Vietnam.

In 2017, a new crude extraction platform was installed on the Kinabalu field as part of a redevelopment project. This involved integrating the new platform with existing facilities, including the installation of a bridge between the KNDP-A integrated drilling/production platform and the KNDW-D wellhead platform.

EnergyEdge’s Role

Following the project’s completion, EnergyEdge was engaged to support two key documentation initiatives:

  • Consolidation of two separate Platform Start-up and Operating Manuals (OPMs) into a single, user-friendly volume
  • Drafting and production of a Close-Out Report for the installation of the inter-platform bridge

Platform Operating Manual (OPM)

To produce the updated single-volume OPM, EnergyEdge carried out the following:

  • Liaised with offshore staff to perform a full technical review of the existing OPMs
  • Converted both documents into a newly formatted, company-specific structure
  • Organised the content for easy reference and usability at the worksite
  • Edited all sections for clarity, operational relevance, and readability
  • Proofread the final document following client approval
  • Delivered two full-colour, professionally bound hard copies for field use

Close-Out Report

For the bridge installation report, EnergyEdge was responsible for:

  • Coordinating with the client’s engineering team to define the report’s scope and objectives
  • Reviewing and summarising contractor-provided close-out documentation
  • Designing a fit-for-purpose reporting template
  • Drafting and revising the report based on feedback from technical and project leadership
  • Final proofreading and delivery in two soft-copy formats for internal use

Outcomes

  • A single, field-ready OPM designed for clarity, usability, and operational alignment
  • A complete and well-structured Close-Out Report to support project closure and internal reporting
  • Streamlined documentation that reflects real-world operational needs while maintaining technical accuracy

Conclusion

This engagement supported the upstream company’s goal of improving document consistency, clarity, and operational usability following a major redevelopment effort on the Kinabalu field.
