Implementing a Well Integrity Management System – Middle East
A privately owned Lebanese upstream oil and gas exploration and production company, having made several discoveries and producing over 28,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD), identified the need for a structured and standardised Well Integrity Management System (WIMS) to support sustainable operations and regulatory alignment.
EnergyEdge’s Role
EnergyEdge was engaged to provide onsite support in the design and implementation of a full WIMS tailored to the company’s operations. The system was developed in alignment with ISO 16530-1 and anticipated Ministry of Oil and Gas (MOG) guidelines.
Key activities included:
- Preparation of a WIMS framework in accordance with ISO standards and local guidelines
- Review of the entire well portfolio and incorporation into a Well Integrity Severity Evaluation Ranking (WISER) database to prioritise critical wells
- Development of a Wells Failure Model, including detailed risk assessments
- Drafting of a Company Wells Barrier Policy
- Creation of Generic Well Barrier Diagrams covering all well types
- Preparation of detailed procedures covering:
- Barrier verification
- Maintenance and testing protocols
- Data recording and documentation practices
- Development of a RACI chart defining roles and responsibilities for all well integrity-related tasks
- Provision of a generic WIMS software tool for internal use, along with guidance on suitable bespoke software options
Following the onsite work, EnergyEdge also provided remote support to assist with documentation reviews and to ensure long-term system sustainability. Guidance was offered to help internal stakeholders take ownership of the WIMS and maintain its integrity without external dependency.
Outcomes
- A fully developed, ISO-aligned WIMS tailored to the client’s well types, operational scale, and risk profile
- Clear visibility into well integrity risks through the WISER database
- Strengthened internal accountability and knowledge through well-defined processes and diagrams
- System ownership successfully transferred to internal users for sustainable, long-term management
Conclusion
This engagement enabled the operator to transition from reactive well integrity practices to a proactive, structured management system, aligned with global standards and tailored to local operational needs.
