About this Training Course
This practical, field-oriented programme provides participants with a structured approach to the planning, design and execution of acidizing treatments in sandstone and carbonate reservoirs. It begins with a review of acidizing operations, common misconceptions and the reasons why treatments fail, before focusing on formation damage, well candidate selection and the practical field calculations required to develop an effective stimulation treatment.
The programme then moves into acid formulations and laboratory testing, followed by dedicated treatment design for sandstone and carbonate formations. Participants will examine the key considerations involved in designing HF acid treatments, developing appropriate pumping schedules and addressing the different reaction and stimulation mechanisms associated with sandstone and carbonate reservoirs. Practical, step-by-step job design sessions enable participants to apply the concepts directly to an upcoming sandstone or carbonate acidizing treatment.
The course also addresses special operational considerations associated with high-water-cut and horizontal wells, together with job quality assurance and control. Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on practical decision-making, treatment design and avoiding common causes of unsuccessful acidizing jobs. The combination of field calculations, design exercises, quizzes and practical lessons provides participants with an immediately applicable framework for improving the technical quality and effectiveness of acidizing operations.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate and select suitable wells for acidizing by identifying formation problems, potential damage mechanisms and the appropriate stimulation objectives.
- Apply practical field calculations to acidizing operations, including treatment parameters and determination of fracture pressure.
- Understand acid formulations, chemical functions and laboratory testing requirements and their importance in designing safe and effective acid treatments.
- Design sandstone and carbonate acidizing treatments, including treatment selection, acid volumes, pumping schedules and key operational considerations.
- Develop and assess practical acidizing job designs while addressing challenges associated with high-water-cut and horizontal wells and applying appropriate QA/QC practices.
This course is designed for professionals involved in well productivity, stimulation, completion and well intervention activities, including:
- Technical and engineering personnel responsible for acidizing job design, planning, or evaluation
- Field and Operations Engineers involved in stimulation activities
- Production Engineers
- Petroleum Engineers
- Well Intervention Engineers
- Well Services Engineers
- Stimulation Engineers
- Production Technologists

This highly practical, instructor-led programme combines technical discussions, field-based examples, case studies, guided calculations, interactive exercises and practical job-design activities. Participants will progressively apply the concepts covered to sandstone and carbonate acidizing scenarios, including fluid and additive selection, treatment volumes, pumping schedules and operational considerations. Guided exercises allow participants to develop their own sandstone and carbonate acidizing treatment schedules using their own field data where appropriate, or representative field data provided by the trainer. The programme also places strong emphasis on post-treatment evaluation, including assessment of treatment performance, diversion and distribution, flowback information and the interpretation of treatment results to improve future jobs. Daily quizzes and interactive discussions will be used to reinforce learning and address participants’ specific field challenges.

Acid Stimulation helps improve fluid flow in a well. First, engineers pump acid into the rock. As a result, the acid can remove damage and help fluids move more easily.
Sandstone acidizing often uses HCl and HF to remove damage. However, carbonate acidizing mainly uses HCl. Therefore, each rock type needs a different acid mix.
Engineers first find out why a well has poor flow. They also check pressure, output and well condition. Then, they decide if Acid Stimulation can help.
Good Acid Stimulation depends on the right acid, rate and amount. In addition, rock type and heat can affect the result. Therefore, careful planning is important.
Wormholing happens when acid makes small flow paths in carbonate rock. As a result, fluids can move more easily. This can also improve Acid Stimulation results.
Engineers compare well results before and after Acid Stimulation. They also check output, pressure and flow. Then, they see if the treatment reached its goal.
