About this Training Course
With an average (global) rate-of-success of about 40%, many exploration wells fail to find producible hydrocarbons. A critical quality of explorers is therefore the ability to recognise the ‘good’ prospects that have a good chance to result in a discovery. As no two prospects are the same, it is not easy to know what to look for, especially when dealing with prospects in frontier basins for which there is little calibration. A significant challenge lays in the fact that explorers are expected to be creative and resourceful in coming up with attractive play concepts and trapping configurations, while they also must be brutally honest and realistic when assessing the risks of their evaluated prospects.
What makes this course different
Many technical courses focus primarily on interpretation techniques, workflows, and skills. In this course it is assumed that the technical skills have been acquired, and focus is on a higher-level assessment that should help explorers to identify prospects that deserve to be tested and prospects with critical flaws that need to be avoided.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Think creatively and challenge established knowledge in prospect identification and assessment.
- Recognise and overcome common cognitive biases that affect exploration decisions.
- Balance creative, out-of-the-box thinking with sound geological principles to avoid irresponsible optimism.
- Analyse instructor and participant case histories to evaluate prospects and plays.
- Identify critical flaws, risks, and success factors that impact prospect and play assessment.
- Apply both behavioural and technical insights to enhance innovation and decision-making in exploration workflows.
This workshop is designed for experienced geoscientists working in exploration, for prospect portfolio analysts, and for their direct supervisors. It should also be very instructive for staff from disciplines working closely with exploration staff, such as reservoir engineers, petrophysicists and geophysicists.
Pre-requisites:
Participants should ideally:
- Be experienced explorationists, portfolio analysts, or specialists working closely with exploration activities.
- Have hands-on experience in risk and volume analysis.
- Preferably have completed Prospect Maturation or Prospect Risk and Volume training.
- Advanced
A workshop format is chosen to make use of the collective knowledge and experience of all participants and for maximum active participation of all participants. Several evaluation processes relevant for the workshop will be presented, and case histories will be discussed. Topics will be introduced by relatively short presentations, followed by break-out group discussions and reporting back to ‘the group’. The main conclusions, findings and learnings will be summarised.
The course director will bring several case histories, and the group of participants will be asked to also have prepared several case histories from their work experience. Each case history will be presented to the group. Learnings from each case history will be summarised.
Your expert course instructor has a PhD in Geology from the University of Utrecht. He worked for 31 years (1979 –2010) with Shell as an exploration geologist in a variety of functions across the globe. As Principle Technical Expert, he was responsible for ensuring that Risk & Volume assessments were carried out consistently and correctly in all of Shell’s exploration units.
In this capacity, he led and participated in countless prospect review sessions and developed and conducted a successful in-house course on Risks & Volume assessment. As manager of the Exploration Excellence Team, he performed in depth analysis of basins and plays and provided advice on exploration opportunities to senior management. Together with his team, he visited most of Shell’s exploration offices, working hands-on with Shell’s local exploration teams to generate new play and prospect ideas and to suggest evaluation techniques and technologies to apply.
In 2010, he was appointed as extraordinary professor Regional and Petroleum Geology at the VU university of Amsterdam and in 2012 also at the University of Utrecht. He was visiting professor at the University of Malaya (Malaysia). Through his own consultancy, as of 2010, he provides advice on exploration activities to several companies and is regularly invited to carry out technical reviews. Activities cover all continents and include Portfolio Reviews, Prospect assessment, Play-based Exploration, and Geothermal activities. He conducts courses on several topics including Risk & Volume Assessment, Prospect Maturation, Basin Analysis, Play-based Exploration, Trap & Seal Analysis, Petroleum Geology for Non-geologists.

The course is helpful in identifying the pitfalls in our business decisions and prospect maturation analysis. It brings out the blind spots and helps increase awareness to create these biases into conscious reality during discussion and evaluation.
Geoscientist, PETRONAS
This course gives me a different perspective to do prospect maturation with regards to being creative and acknowledging biases.
Geoscientist, PETRONAS
A very good course for the staff and above to know the biases in exploration, think outside the box for prospect maturation.
