About this Training Course
Shutdowns, Turnarounds and Outages (STO) are among the most significant recurring business risks faced by asset-intensive organisations. They can account for 40–95% of annual downtime, concentrate the highest levels of safety exposure, and consume capital at many times the normal operating rate. Yet despite their impact, STOs are still too often managed as infrequent projects rather than as a core organisational capability. This STO Masterclass is designed to help change that.
Rather than replacing existing turnaround models or systems, the programme is designed to strengthen and enhance what organisations already do well. Participants are guided through the full Shutdown, Turnaround and Outage lifecycle, with a focus on best-practice approaches, proven techniques and modern tools that can be integrated directly into existing ways of working. The result is a practical, structured approach to building capability, improving control and reducing risk.
This 4-day course is developed and delivered by consultants who are actively supporting some of the world’s most demanding turnarounds. The learning is grounded in real operating environments, shaped by what works in practice — and what does not — when time pressure, safety exposure and production value are at their highest. By drawing on live delivery experience rather than theory alone, the course gives participants practical insight into the realities of STO performance.
The programme is particularly relevant for high-hazard environments, where STOs expose the business to heightened levels of safety risk, production loss and value erosion. It is especially valuable where there are tight operating margins, a high opportunity cost of downtime, complex unit interactions and SIMOPS, heavy contractor involvement, and significant process safety exposure during shutdown and start-up. Every element of the masterclass is framed around these realities, ensuring relevance for both full asset turnarounds and discrete-unit outages.
This is a certificate course where participants will have the option to participate for a short exam on the final day of the course to gain a Certificate in Advanced Turnaround, Shutdown & Outage Management from EnergyEDGE and the Academy of Turnarounds Operations and Maintenance (ATOM)

The Academy for Turnarounds, Operations & Maintenance (ATOM)

The focus is on translating ideas into practical action that can be applied directly in the workplace.
Your expert course leader is an award-winning consultant and trainer with 30 years’ experience in maintenance and reliability improvement. He founded his consultancy and training business to focus on maintenance and reliability improvement. As part of this, he developed a range of maintenance “models of excellence” with inputs from authors, international lecturers and some of the world’s leading consultants and operators. These models align well with the SRMP 5 pillars of maintenance. His work has been recognised as being at the leading edge of industry best practice, winning independent awards such as the UK Chemical Industries Association “Excellence in Engineering” award.
He spent the initial 10 years of his career in maintenance management for a major Chemicals Company (ICI), so he brings a very practical approach to training. He moved into consulting with ABB Eutech as their global maintenance specialist where he led maintenance and reliability best practice panels, delivered a wide range of maintenance improvement projects and trained other consultants.
He has worked across five continents, in a wide variety of environments from the world’s largest oil refinery to a small drinks production line. He is a fully qualified CMRP professional, and a globally respected maintenance consultant and best practice trainer.
He remains close to the industry as a respected specialist helping operating companies to achieve changes in performance. This ongoing field work enables him to continue to refine and extend best practice and the learning from this is continually fed into his training.
He now specialises in training and running Maintenance and Operating health checks but also remains active in maintenance improvement projects, facilitating some of the largest programmes in Europe. In addition, his unique experience of facilitating two major turnarounds when the Coronavirus escalated into lockdown have given him a rich insight into how events of this nature can disrupt maintenance. Moreover, his involvement in developing management processes and leading a Coronavirus response on a major industrial asset means he can talk with direct experience about how to cope and innovate in global pandemic situations.
He is also the expert course leader for the following courses offered by EnergyEdge:
- Preventive and Predictive Maintenance
- Effective Plant Turnaround Management

Great session! I gained new high level knowledge about turnarounds. Loved the story telling and sharing by the trainer in between for examples / contents. Just wanted to share the possible impact of this course on myself, with the new knowledge, this will help me understand the stakeholder/business partner role and responsibility during the event especially on how to support or ease the event flow. This will also assist me to find a way for improvements in our company process workflow and capture some or use some of the best practices in my work or share with my team. Certainly, the sessions helped me to start take note of the importance of how the scopes came in to determine if it should be considered late work
