About this Classroom Training

The rapid evolution of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is significantly transforming energy management. As the demand for reliable and efficient energy solutions surges driven by the increasing reliance on digital infrastructure and renewable energy sources, BESS has become essential for enhancing energy resilience and operational efficiency. Recent trends show a marked shift towards integrating advanced battery technologies, such as lithium-ion and emerging chemistries, into utility-scale applications.

This integration not only facilitates peak shaving and backup power capabilities but also supports the transition to sustainable energy practices. The battery storage market is expanding rapidly, with substantial investments in research and development aimed at improving performance, lifespan, and cost-effectiveness. As organisations seek to optimise their energy strategies, understanding the intricacies of BESS from foundational knowledge of various battery chemistries to the complexities of system design and implementation has become imperative.

This course is designed to equip participants with critical insights into current market dynamics, technological advancements, and best practices for deploying BESS. Through real-world case studies and interactive activities, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of system design principles, procurement processes, and operational strategies necessary for successful BESS implementation.

Additionally, on day 4, the course offers an optional session focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities of integrating BESS in data centre environments. Participants will explore design principles tailored for data centres, including redundancy requirements and integration challenges, while engaging with case studies that provide insights into daily operations and maintenance strategies. By completing this course, participants will enhance their technical knowledge and empower themselves to make informed decisions that align with the future of energy management.

This course will be delivered via face to face over 3-day sessions, comprising of 6 hours 30 minutes per day, 2 breaks of 15 minutes per session. Course Duration: 19.30 hours in total, 19.30 CPD points. For those signing up till day 4, Course Duration: 26 hours in total, 26 CPD points.

By the end of this 3 days training course, participants will be able to:

  • Gain foundational knowledge of battery chemistries, systems, and industry players.
  • Understand system design, optimisation, and contracts governing BESS projects.
  • Learn EPC processes, commissioning practices, and O&M strategies for BESS projects.
  • Explore the ways BESS are tailored for data centres unique needs (optional on day 4).
  • Utility Engineers involve in energy management and integration.
  • Project Managers overseeing battery storage projects.
  • Data Centre Engineers and Facility Managers responsible for energy efficiency and reliability.
  • IT infrastructure specialists focused on power supply and backup solutions.
  • Energy Consultants advising organisations on energy storage solutions and strategies.
  • Market Analysts studying trends in battery technologies and energy storage.
  • Renewable Energy Developers involved in integrating renewable sources with battery storage systems.
  • Project Developers focused on sustainable energy solutions.
  • Battery Manufacturers and Suppliers from companies producing battery technologies or components.
  • Regulatory and Compliance Officers ensuring adherence to industry regulations regarding energy storage systems.
  • EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) professionals involved in BESS projects.
  • Contractors specialising in the construction of data centres and energy systems.
  • Financial Analysts assessing the economic viability of BESS projects.
  • Technicians responsible for the ongoing maintenance of battery systems.
  • Operations Managers overseeing the performance of energy storage installations.

This course will provide comprehensive learning resources, including course materials for future reference and The BESS Book as a complimentary reading material to all registered participants. Each topic will begin with a clearly defined intended learning outcome (LO). The learning experience will be enriched through diverse activities, such as quizzes and assessments, to ensure engagement and understanding. In addition to the core material, participants will have access to supplementary resources, including articles, case studies, and tools. The course structure incorporates interactive elements, such as case studies, practical exercises, and Q&A sessions, which provide opportunities for clarification and deeper understanding.

Your expert instructor is a renewable energy engineer with 15 years of experience, specialising in complex renewable energy infrastructure. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University and worked with DNV, a leading energy storage advisory firm based in Norway, from 2019 to 2023. At DNV, he was a founding member of the Energy Storage Engineering section, serving as Project Manager for over 1 GW of energy storage independent engineering (IE) projects, as well as energy storage mergers and acquisitions, technology reviews, and battery safety advisory services. He also initiated and managed DNV’s Energy Access team, which focused on extending grid services to over 1 billion people without reliable power access.

Besides that, as an expert, he provided sworn testimony in disputes involving energy storage. He conducted site visits for over 2 GW of energy storage projects at various stages of construction and inspected manufacturing facilities producing cells, inverters, and integrated BESS systems. Notably, he has led a team of engineers on a 40 MW / 160 MWh battery project integrated with a 158 MW wind farm near Dakar, Senegal. His expertise extends to managing multiple solar PV installations, highlighting his skills in construction management and renewable energy deployment.

In his role as Project Engineer at ACC Construction Company, he managed critical projects for the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, he has successfully delivered projects across Panama and the United States. His career blends technical engineering proficiency with strong project management capabilities, significantly contributing to global energy access and sustainable development. He holds a Professional Engineering license in the state of Oregon, specialising in Electrical Power Engineering.
