About this Course
Field Development Planning (FDP) is a cornerstone in the lifecycle of offshore oil and gas projects. This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the end-to-end FDP process, aligned with globally recognized industry best practices and stage-gate methodologies. Participants will gain insights into the integration of key technical, commercial, and regulatory components to develop robust and value-driven field development strategies in offshore environments. Through structured modules, attendees will learn how to navigate the appraisal, selection, definition, and execution stages of FDP with confidence.
A central focus of this course is the complex and multidisciplinary nature of offshore projects. It addresses the integration of subsurface reservoir characterization, well planning, surface facility design, and economic evaluation. Attendees will explore various development concepts including fixed platforms, floating systems, and subsea tiebacks. Offshore-specific constraints—such as HSE requirements, logistics, and regulatory frameworks—are thoroughly addressed through real-world case studies and guided exercises.
On the final day, participants will consolidate their knowledge by developing a complete FDP for a sample offshore field. In addition to covering greenfield developments, the course also dives into strategies for mature asset redevelopment, including EOR techniques, waterflood optimization, and late-life asset management. This course empowers professionals with the skills needed to make informed, technically sound, and economically viable development decisions.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the end-to-end Field Development Planning (FDP) process for offshore oil and gas fields, aligned with industry best practices and stage-gate methodologies.
- Integrate subsurface, wells, facilities, commercial, and regulatory elements into a coherent, technically sound, and value-driven development plan.
- Address the distinctive challenges of offshore environments, including complex logistics, stringent HSE requirements, and regulatory compliance.
- Develop the ability to critically evaluate development options, assess trade-offs, manage risks and uncertainties, and make informed, evidence-based decisions.
- Contribute confidently and effectively to the preparation and presentation of an FDP document that meets technical, commercial, and stakeholder expectations.
- Recognize the specific considerations and strategies for mature field redevelopment, including waterflood optimization, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and late-life asset management, through a dedicated session.
This course is designed for professionals involved in planning, developing, and managing offshore oil and gas fields. Participants typically come from upstream operating companies, service providers, and regulatory bodies. Ideal attendees are those involved in early field appraisal through to full field development execution, or those managing mature offshore assets. Mid- to senior-level professionals looking to enhance their technical integration and decision-making skills in offshore project contexts will gain significant value from this program. It is particularly suited for:
- Reservoir Engineers
- Petroleum Engineers
- Well Engineers
- Facilities Engineers
- Field Development Planners
- Offshore Project Managers
- Geoscientists
- Asset Managers
- Technical Advisors
- Regulatory and HSE Professionals
- Basic
- Intermediate
The course uses a highly interactive and practical approach. Each module includes presentations, real-world case studies, group discussions, and hands-on exercises. Participants will work through a simulated offshore field development scenario, applying what they’ve learned in a collaborative team environment. Tools such as decision trees, economic evaluation frameworks, and technical screening matrices will be used. The course culminates with the group presentation of an integrated FDP, reinforcing the learning outcomes through applied practice.
