About this Classroom Training
Data centre growth will catalyst a rise in demand for power because data centres may be in clusters, requiring the strengthening of the local energy network. As data centres become increasingly central to our digital infrastructure and they are heavy users of power, understanding their operational intricacies and their impact on the power grid is crucial for ensuring reliability and efficiency.
This 3-day course focuses on the fundamentals of large-load facilities, with a specialised emphasis on data centres. Participants will delve into the complexities of managing these facilities, exploring various operational modes such as grid-connected and islanded operations. The course will address critical challenges faced by data centres that can significantly affect performance and reliability. In addition to the essential concepts, participants will engage with advanced topics in the context of large data centres and their interactions with the power grid. Furthermore, participants will be exposed to the role of series compensated lines in enhancing grid performance and discuss essential topics required to ensure system reliability and stability.
A significant focus will be placed on the application of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices, which are instrumental in improving grid performance and mitigating adverse effects associated with high-load facilities. In addition, insights into Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) will be provided, highlighting the importance of N+1 redundancy configurations to enhance reliability in data centres operations. By the end of this course, participants will have gained a well-rounded understanding on how to effectively manage and optimise large load facilities, particularly data centres, to ensure robust and stable power grid performance.
This course will be delivered face-to-face over 3-day sessions, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 19.5 hours in total, 19.5 CPD points.
By the end of this 3 day training course, participants will be able to:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding and analyse the challenges associated with modeling and system studies for inverter/converter-based systems facilities.
- Address network stability and reliability issues, focusing on concerns related to network inertia and overall stability.
- Explore the technologies of grid-following and grid-forming inverters.
- Acquire foundational knowledge of large load facilities, particularly data centres, emphasising their operational modes and unique challenges.
- Investigate the various operational modes of large load facilities, including grid-connected and islanded operations, and their effects on power stability and performance.
- Assess the impact of large loads on power quality, focusing on harmonics, flicker, voltage stability, and frequency stability issues.
- Understand Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR), Sub-Synchronous Controller Interaction (SSCI), and Sub-Synchronous Ferro Resonance (SSFR) issues in large data centre, including the influence of series compensated lines.
- Learn about Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices, their functionalities, and their role in enhancing grid reliability while addressing data centre-related challenges.
- Examine the function and operation of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) in maintaining power reliability, including N+1 configurations to improve system resilience.
- Apply acquired knowledge to devise strategies for optimising the operation and interconnection of large load facilities to bolster grid performance and reliability, incorporating necessary studies to ensure system stability.

Your expert instructor has established himself as a prominent figure in the field of electrical engineering, particularly in power systems and renewable energy integration. He holds a significant academic and professional background, having graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Western University in Canada.
His career began with his role as an Electrical Design Specialist at the Power Quality Research Group in Malaysia, where he conducted essential studies for integrating renewable energy sources into the national grid. His work involved load flow studies, dynamic analyses, and equipment sizing using advanced simulation software like DigSilent and PSCAD. This foundational experience set the stage for his future endeavors in the energy sector. In 2018, he moved to Canada and joined Hatch as a Power System Specialist, where he focused on steady-state and dynamic power system studies. His expertise grew further at Tetra Tech, where he served as a Power System Studies Specialist, leading various projects that included tuning Power System Stabilisers for large hydroelectric plants and conducting extensive transient recovery voltage studies.
Currently, he oversees grid interconnection processes for large-scale renewable resources and leads forensic analyses for plants experiencing curtailments. Alongside his professional commitments, your expert instructor contributes to academia as a Lecturer at Western University, teaching courses on modeling power systems focusing on electromagnetic transient environments. With over a decade of experience, continues to influence the energy landscape through his work on automation tools for power system studies and his involvement in significant renewable energy projects across North America.
