About this Training Course
In today’s asset-intensive industries, reliability engineering has become a critical pillar for ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. This 5-day Reliability Engineering course is designed to equip engineers, technical managers, and maintenance professionals with the tools and methodologies necessary to enhance asset performance and minimize failures in complex systems.
This comprehensive training program introduces participants to the core principles and applications of reliability engineering, beginning with foundational concepts such as failure probability, statistical distributions, and key reliability metrics. Participants will explore a broad spectrum of tools, including Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA/FMECA), Fault and Event Tree Analysis (FTA/ETA), Reliability Block Diagrams (RBDs), and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM).
The course integrates both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice, covering degradation mechanisms, risk assessment, instrumented protective functions (IPF), and modern inspection strategies like Risk-Based Inspection (RBI). Participants will apply these concepts through in-depth case studies, exercises, and simulations, culminating in the strategic implementation of reliability improvements and change management frameworks.
Given the evolving challenges in sectors like oil & gas, power generation, petrochemicals, and manufacturing, this course offers timely and market-relevant competencies. It ensures that attendees are well-prepared to support safer operations, regulatory compliance, and sustainable maintenance strategies in increasingly demanding operational environments.
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand and apply key reliability engineering concepts, metrics, and statistical tools for assessing system and component performance.
- Utilize structured tools such as RCM, RBI, FMECA, and FTA/ETA for analyzing and mitigating failure risks across asset lifecycles.
- Interpret degradation mechanisms and failure patterns to plan effective maintenance strategies and inspection intervals.
- Build and analyze Reliability Block Diagrams (RBDs) and Weibull models to forecast failures and optimize resource allocation.
- Develop and implement reliability improvement initiatives, incorporating data-driven insights, change management techniques, and stakeholder communication.
This course is ideal for professionals responsible for asset performance, maintenance strategy, and reliability improvement in industrial settings, including:
- Reliability Engineers
- Engineering Team Leads
- Maintenance Engineers and Supervisors
- Operations and Plant Managers
- Asset Integrity Managers
- Safety, Risk, and QA/QC Professionals
- Mechanical Engineers
- Technical Consultants and Project Engineers
- Inspection and Corrosion Engineers
- CMMS and Data Analysts supporting maintenance functions
- Basic
- Intermediate
This course combines instructor-led presentations, real-world case studies, and guided hands-on exercises to reinforce practical application of reliability tools and concepts. Interactive discussions and data-driven analysis ensure direct relevance to participants’ work environments.
With a career spanning over 30 years in the energy sector, your expert course instructor has built a strong reputation as a Maintenance and Reliability specialist. His global experience includes significant roles over 20+ years at Shell (Asia, Europe, Middle East), four years with BP (UK, Norway), and five years at ARAMCO (Saudi Arabia). His core competencies lie in the strategic development and application of programs for enhancing Reliability, optimizing Maintenance & Integrity, reducing work backlogs, and driving Operations Excellence. He holds both a Master’s Degree in Reliability Engineering and status as a Certified Reliability Leader, further enhanced by a dynamic and motivating approach that pushes trainees to reach their potential in his courses.
Practical Work Experience:
Reliability & Maintenance Manager, Shell International
Managed, coached and lead multi-discipline teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrument, Inspection & SCADA) for Shell European EP Facilities to drive up Equipment Availability, while assuring Technical Integrity at Optimal Cost. Drove TR-MIE (Total Reliability, Maintenance Integrity Execution) and ORIP (Operational Reliability Improvement) for OSO (Oil South Operations) in Oman. Successfully achieved and sustained ‘Calculative’ for TR-MIE and ORIP for the Marmul Facility, (one of only two Shell facilities worldwide). Maintenance & Integrity Lead during evaluation of selected ventures, projects and farm-ins. Introduced Lean Processes to eliminate non-value adding activities and Visual Management to improve visibility and communication. Mentored new GDP (Graduate Development Program) Engineers for Reliability & Maintenance, Operations Readiness & Assurance, Integrated Activity Planning & HSSE Risk Management. Presented to Technical Steering Committees (Shell) and Joint Venture partners (external) on RAM Assurance, Reliability Improvement and Maintenance Optimisation.
Reliability & Maintenance Lead, Shell UK Exploration and Production
Responsible for providing expertise in reliability engineering and maintenance strategy to new projects. Was a founding member of the Shell R&M ‘Centre of Excellence’ team, responsible for providing expertise in reliability engineering and maintenance strategy to greenfield and brownfield projects. Co-developed Maintenance Strategy Review (MSR) procedure to establish risk-based maintenance strategies using Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and Operations in Projects (OIP) standard, integrating operations, safety and project design. Implementation of these standards made major performance improvements to 22 Shell Expro installations in the North Sea. PM and Shell Representative to OREDA (Offshore Reliability Database) Steering Committee (long term International). Managed the creation of a comprehensive Reliability Database, using failure records from 15 Offshore Platforms over a 17-year period and applying Weibull analysis. It includes a Relief Valve Database analysing some 14,000 test bench records, as well as one for Gas, Heat and Smoke Detectors. Regular lecturer in RCM at the Shell Training Centre in Holland, conducting 14 sessions over an 8-year period.
Provided Reliability Engineering Support to BP (Dyce) with the primary responsibility of visibly improving the reliability of the SNS (Southern North Sea) producing assets, comprising 17 offshore installations (15 NUIs + 2 Manned). Lead Defect Elimination Teams and conducted Incident Investigations to eliminate root cause of failures. In addition, conducted Vulnerabilities Review to determine low probability, high consequence events (sleeping tigers), foreseeable but not visible.
Senior Program Development Analyst, ARAMCO (Arabian American Oil Company), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Developed and taught reliability and maintenance training courses for ARAMCO Gas Oil Separator Plants (GOSPs). Performed task analyses and designed programs of instruction, including support media. Responsible for the practical and theoretical instruction of Saudi Arabian Nationals employed in ARAMCO plants.
