About this Classroom Training
Power plants commonly use fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas to generate electricity, releasing significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere. These emissions are major contributors to global climate change, driving an international effort to eliminate fossil fuels within the next 15 to 20 years.
Innovative techniques and methods are needed to combat climate change. Biomass is considered approximately CO₂-neutral because, during its growth, it absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide that is later released during combustion. Therefore, the net CO₂ emissions from the biomass cycle are effectively zero.
This 4-day course provides a comprehensive introduction to climate change mitigation strategies, with a specific focus on biomass energy. It explores whether sufficient biomass resources exist to replace fossil fuels, outlines the various types of biomass, and examines the technologies used to convert biomass into energy including principles, processes, equipment, and real-life case studies. Participants will gain exposure to potential biomass feedstocks and compare applications such as incineration, gasification, and other conversion technologies, along with their respective benefits and limitations. Environmental and economic factors in project development will also be discussed.
The training offers insight into the broader context of energy and climate challenges, highlighting the unique aspects of utilising biomass, technical obstacles, and best practice solutions. Participants will be guided through the essential steps for developing biomass energy projects and how to proceed effectively. The course includes an in-depth analysis of different biomass types, enabling participants to understand relevant terminology and technologies to engage proactively with key activities. This fosters a holistic understanding and provides a strong foundation for effective cross-departmental collaboration.
By the end of the course, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to advance the use of biomass in sustainable energy systems.
This course will be delivered face-to-face over a 4-days session, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 26 hours in total, 26 CPD points. Maximum number of participants: 20.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand and compare the technologies, power generation methods, and capacity factors of renewable energy systems.
- Comprehend the fundamentals of electricity grid operation, including supply-demand balancing, grid stability, and the roles of key stakeholders.
- Recognise the properties, environmental impacts, and types of traditional fuels and solid biomass used for power generation.
- Develop in depth knowledge of combustion fundamentals and fuel selection to optimise power plant efficiency and integrate renewable solid biomass with traditional fuels for power generation.
