About this Training Course
Microgrids play a significant role in supporting the industry’s decarbonization efforts by providing localized, renewable energy solutions. Microgrids are a vital tool in the transition to a low-carbon future. By enabling local renewable energy generation, enhancing resilience, and supporting innovative technologies, microgrids contribute significantly to the decarbonization efforts at both community and national levels.
In the context of a microgrid, a BESS can be connected to various distributed power generators to create a hybrid solution, increasing the reliability of supply of electricity to the local users. Microgrids can be leveraged to reduce emissions by strategically switching to low- or no-carbon energy sources and allow operators to generate revenue streams by participating in ancillary markets. As a Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are less expensive to operate than diesel gensets. By developing a microgrid system with one or more BESS’s, businesses can supply the critical loads such as data centre in a cost-effective way.
This course presents the state of the art in power electronics of inverter-based resources that allow an advanced, flexible and economic operation of the microgrid. Microgrids often serve as testbeds for innovative technologies, such as advanced control systems and new energy management strategies, contributing to broader decarbonization efforts. The microgrid’s control system controls the demand response through dispatchable generation and loads and ensures safe, effective, affordable, and reliable power supply to consumers.
The Internet of Things (IoT) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are used together to create smart microgrids that can control and monitor the energy supply. An effective Energy Management Systems (EMS) is vital for the successful operation of microgrids, enabling them to function optimally, enhance sustainability, and provide reliable energy to communities. The course presents the EMS in microgrids as a critical component for optimizing the generation, storage, and consumption of energy and increasing the reliability and resilience of the network.
