About this Classroom Training

Gas distribution networks consist of specialised interconnected components such as regulators, pipes, tubes, fittings, manifolds, and valves that safely transport gas from high-pressure sources to end-users. Today’s operators face multifaceted challenges in an industry undergoing rapid transformation.

These challenges include navigating stricter environmental regulations while maintaining operational efficiency, implementing technological innovations that enhance safety and performance, and addressing risks from aging infrastructure, corrosion, and emerging cyber-physical security threats.

This comprehensive 3-day course blends theoretical knowledge with practical application, equipping professionals who oversee large-scale pipeline networks with the expertise to effectively manage modern gas distribution systems. Participants will develop strategies to navigate market trends, meet regulatory requirements, and mitigate operational risks while ensuring network safety, integrity, and efficiency in today’s evolving energy landscape.

This course will be delivered face-to-face over 3-day, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 19.50 hours in total, 19.50 CPD points.

By the end of this 3 days training course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of gas distribution.
  • Apply safe design practices for gas distribution systems.
  • Evaluate societal impacts and conduct comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Implement effective corrosion control and cathodic protection methods.
  • Develop and execute maintenance and inspection strategies.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations and system failures.
  • Gas Distribution Engineer responsible for the design, operation, and optimisation of gas distribution systems.
  • Gas Network and Distribution Engineers handling the inspection, and maintenance of gas distribution infrastructure.
  • Operations Manager (Gas Utilities) overseeing the entire operation of gas distribution networks, including scheduling, resource allocation, and coordination between field teams. Ensures operational efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintenance Engineer focusing on preventive and corrective maintenance of pipelines, valves, regulators, and associated equipment.
  • Asset Integrity and Risk Management Specialist Assessing and manages risks associated with aging infrastructure, corrosion, and potential system failures. Implements asset management strategies and risk mitigation plans to prolong asset life and ensure safety.
  • Compliance and Safety Officer (Gas Distribution) ensuring all operations adhere to local and international safety standards and environmental regulations.
  • Pipeline Integrity Engineer specialising in monitoring and maintaining the structural integrity of pipelines by utilising inspection technologies, analyses failure mechanisms, and recommends corrective actions for corrosion, fatigue, and third-party damage.
  • Corrosion Control and Cathodic Protection Specialist involve in designing and maintaining corrosion protection systems and monitors system effectiveness and implements improvements to prevent pipeline degradation.
  • Emergency Response Coordinator (Gas Networks) developing and managing emergency response plans for gas distribution.
  • Project Engineer (Gas Infrastructure) managing new gas pipeline projects, upgrades, or expansions.

This course will provide comprehensive learning resources, including course materials for future reference. Each topic will commence with a clearly defined intended learning outcome (LO). The learning experience will be enriched through diverse activities such as quizzes, videos, and assessments, ensuring engagement and understanding. In addition to the core material, participants will have access to additional resources like articles, case studies, and tools. The course structure incorporates interactive elements, such as group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, enhancing hands-on learning experiences. Q&A sessions will provide opportunities for clarifications and deeper understanding.

With over 40 years of hands-on experience in gas transmission and distribution engineering, he is a leading authority in the energy sector, specialising in both natural gas and hydrogen networks. His career spans the full spectrum of gas infrastructure-from the safe design and operation of distribution systems to advanced asset risk management and regulatory compliance. He has been instrumental in pioneering future-ready energy solutions, including the assessment and integration of hydrogen blending into existing gas networks, and has played a key role in shaping industry best practices for corrosion control, cathodic protection, and pipeline integrity.

His global experience includes principal consultancy roles in Australia and Singapore with DNV GL, where he led operational risk and integrity management projects, developed risk assessment methodologies, and delivered technical training on asset management systems such as ISO 55001. His expertise extends to the development and implementation of maintenance and inspection philosophies, root cause failure investigations, and comprehensive audits-ensuring the ongoing safety and reliability of complex gas distribution networks.

Earlier in his career, he served as Engineering Compliance Manager at Lootah BCGas in Dubai, overseeing regulatory adherence for gas network design, construction, and maintenance, and managing large-scale projects from inception through operation. At Northern Gas Networks in the UK, he held key roles in engineering assurance and integrity management, ensuring that distribution systems met the highest standards of safety and compliance.

He began his career with National Grid and British Gas/Transco, gaining invaluable field experience as a Network and Distribution Technician. This practical foundation underpins his commitment to operational excellence, safety, and innovation in gas distribution. As a trainer, he brings a wealth of real-world knowledge to every session, empowering course participants to address today’s challenges in gas distribution-such as aging infrastructure, leak prevention, risk management, and emergency response-while ensuring the safe, efficient, and resilient delivery of energy to communities.
