About this Classroom Training
Submarine power cables form the critical backbone of modern offshore energy infrastructure, enabling power transmission across oceans and connecting remote islands, offshore wind farms, and international grids. As the demand for renewable energy and cross-border interconnectors accelerates, so does the need for professionals with deep technical knowledge of these complex and high-stakes systems.
This 3-day comprehensive course is designed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and practical insights required to navigate the lifecycle of submarine power cables. Covering key aspects from design principles, manufacturing, route engineering, through to installation methodologies, protection strategies, and integrity management. The course also delves into real-world failure case studies and forensic investigation techniques.
Participants will gain a multidisciplinary perspective on cable technology, environmental and operational challenges, and engineering best practices, enabling them to make informed decisions and mitigate risks throughout project execution and operational life.
This course will be delivered face-to-face over 3 – full day, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 19.50 hours in total, 19.50 CPD points. This course can also be delivered through Virtual Inspector Led Training.
By the end of this 3 days training course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles and historical development of submarine power cables.
- Identify and analyse the diverse applications of submarine power cables in modern infrastructure.
- Gain in-depth knowledge of submarine power cable design elements and their impact on performance.
- Comprehend the intricacies of thermal, mechanical, and electrical design for high-voltage submarine cable systems.
- Familiarise themselves with essential accessories, manufacturing processes, and marine survey techniques.
- Learn about installation techniques, protection strategies, and advanced jointing methods.
- Develop an understanding of common cable damages, repair strategies, and fault detection techniques.
- Be equipped to conduct failure investigations, analyse failure modes, and apply risk assessment methodologies.
This course has been designed for professionals working in the power sector looking to further develop their careers to keep up to date on emerging technologies.

Q&A sessions will provide opportunities for clarifications and deeper understanding.
Your expert instructor is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and Professional Engineer with over 17 years of international experience in electrical failure investigations, specialising in submarine power cables and high-voltage systems. He has led and participated in more than 200 root cause investigations involving complex failures across transmission, distribution, and offshore energy systems including critical incidents at offshore wind farms and interconnector submarine cables.
He formerly served at leading energy consultancy organisation in the Netherlands, where he conducted investigations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. His expertise includes analysing insulation degradation, joint failures, cable termination breakdowns, and mechanical damage due to environmental or operational stresses.
He is also an experienced technical trainer, having delivered numerous in-depth courses on power cable ageing, diagnostics, quality assurance, and forensic investigation methodologies to TSOs, utilities, and engineering professionals worldwide. His instruction style blends scientific method, real-world case studies, and hands-on experience with tools like TDR, OTDR, and RCA analysis methods.
His qualifications include certifications in forensic fire investigation, thermal imaging (ISO 18436), and Global Wind Organization (GWO), making him uniquely positioned to train engineers on the challenges and solutions specific to submarine cable systems. His experience across renewables (offshore wind, solar), utilities, and oil & gas industries ensures that course participants gain both technical depth and field-proven insight.
