About this Training Course

This 5-day CCS training programme combines advanced classroom learning with an exclusive technical site visit to two of Norway’s most significant CCS facilities. Designed for professionals involved in carbon capture and storage projects, the programme provides both the technical foundation and the practical industry exposure needed to understand storage site compliance in line with ISO 27914.

Over the first four days, participants will develop a structured understanding of the key technical, operational and certification considerations for CO₂ storage sites, including site selection, risk assessment, monitoring, verification, containment assurance and compliance documentation. The training is designed to help participants interpret ISO 27914 requirements with greater confidence and apply them in real project and certification contexts.

On Day 5, participants will take part in an exclusive technical site visit to Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) and the Northern Lights CCS project. This provides a rare opportunity to see how core CCS concepts are translated into operational practice — from capture and transport interfaces to monitoring systems, HSE controls and risk management across the CCS value chain.

By combining technical training with direct industry exposure, the programme offers a more complete learning experience than classroom instruction alone. Participants leave not only with a stronger understanding of ISO 27914 compliance requirements, but also with valuable insight into how CCS infrastructure is implemented and managed in real-world operations.

Exclusive CCS Industry Site Visit | Day 5

Participants will gain direct exposure to:

  • Industrial CO₂ capture activities at TCM
  • CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure at Northern Lights
  • Monitoring and verification systems in practice
  • Applied HSE and operational risk management
  • How compliance requirements connect to real CCS operations

Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM)

One of the world’s leading CO₂ capture test centres, offering insight into industrial-scale capture technologies and operational learning.

Northern Lights Project

A flagship CO₂ transport and storage development, offering direct visibility into how large-scale CCS infrastructure is implemented in practice.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Master the process of acquiring ISO 27914 certification for different CCS project phases, with a focus on the development phase up to the Storage Development Plan.
  • Develop proficiency in preparing comprehensive documentation for geological, hydro-geological, geochemical, and geomechanical characterization and modeling, tailored to ISO 27914 requirements.
  • Gain hands-on experience in designing and documenting a measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV) plan that meets ISO standards for CCS projects.
  • Learn to conduct and document thorough risk assessments for CO₂ storage capacity, injectivity, and containment, aligning with ISO 27914 guidelines.
  • Acquire the skills to integrate multidisciplinary CCS project elements into a cohesive ISO certification evidence package, ready for independent review.

This course is ideal for professionals involved in developing CO₂ transport and storage projects. The course is designed to benefit both technical specialists and management-level professionals who need a comprehensive understanding of CCS project requirements and ISO certification processes. Participants should have a basic understanding of geological concepts and subsurface operations. While not mandatory, prior experience with risk assessment methodologies and familiarity with environmental regulations would be advantageous. The course is particularly valuable for those transitioning from traditional oil and gas roles into CCS projects, as well as professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in CCS regulatory compliance and project development.

This comprehensive course is based on ISO 27914, and participants are required to have access to their own legal copy of the standard prior to enrolment, either purchased through the ISO website or directly through us. Learning is delivered through lectures, discussions, interactive examples, quizzes, group exercises, and practical workshops, with participants using structured templates to develop skills in gathering and documenting evidence for independent ISO review. The course also encourages participants to bring their own project challenges for discussion, while the site visits to Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) and Northern Lights help connect classroom learning with real CCS operations and risk management practices.

Your expert course instructor who is based in the Netherlands, is a highly experienced professional with over 30 years in the oil and gas industry, specializing in subsurface and geomechanical risk assessments. He holds an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and Computational Mechanics from Delft Technical University. His expertise spans across various aspects of petroleum engineering, with a particular focus on geomechanics and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

In terms of ISO CCS compliance, he has been an external team member of DNV’s CCS certification services since 2021. He has participated in various CCS certification projects globally, contributing his expertise to ensure compliance with ISO 27914 standards for geological storage of CO2. Additionally, he is one of the two authors of Shell’s global minimum standard on CCS containment assessment, highlighting his significant role in shaping industry standards.

Throughout his career, he has worked with several prominent companies in the energy sector. His longest tenure was with Shell, where he held various positions from 1991 to 2020, including Principal Geomechanical Expert. Since 2021, he has been working as a CCS and Geomechanics trainer, a Principal CCS consultant, and a Principal Geomechanics Consultant.

Key achievements in his career include developing and delivering courses on CCS and geomechanics for well engineers and E&P subsurface disciplines. He has provided technical assurance to numerous development projects, including the Porthos CCS project. At Shell, he was instrumental in developing probabilistic assessments and induced-seismicity simulations for geomechanical applications. He also played a crucial role in coordinating the deployment of Smart Fields technologies in Africa, which led to the identification of two fields to be developed as Smart Fields from day one.

Your expert course instructor’s expertise extends to risk identification, assessment, and assurance reviews for CCS projects globally. He has contributed to updating guidelines for the EU CCS Directive and has provided international training in both CCS and geomechanics to exploration and production operators and regulators. His comprehensive understanding of the CCS value chain, combined with his experience in ISO certification processes, makes him a valuable expert in the field of CCS and geomechanical risk assessment.

1. What is CCS Compliance for Storage Sites?

CCS Compliance for Storage Sites means showing that a CO2 storage site can operate safely and perform as expected. It includes site selection, risk assessment, containment, monitoring, and documentation. ISO 27914 helps project teams assess these areas in a structured way.

2. Why is storage site compliance important in CCS projects?

Storage site compliance matters because captured CO2 must stay securely contained over the long term. It helps teams confirm storage capacity, injectivity, and seal integrity. As a result, operators can reduce uncertainty and support better technical and regulatory decisions.

3. What data do teams need to assess a CO2 storage site?

Teams need geological, hydrogeological, geochemical, and geomechanical data. They also assess the reservoir, caprock, faults, and nearby wells. Next, they model CO2 movement, pressure changes, and possible leakage pathways. This evidence helps determine whether a site is suitable for long-term storage.

4. How does monitoring support CCS Compliance for Storage Sites?

Monitoring helps teams track CO2 movement and confirm that the storage site performs as expected. For example, it can measure plume migration, pressure behaviour, and containment over time. Therefore, monitoring is central to CCS Compliance for Storage Sites because it provides evidence, not just assumptions.

5. How does ISO 27914 differ from CCS regulations?

ISO 27914 gives project teams a technical framework for geological CO2 storage. By contrast, regulations set legal duties, permits, and reporting rules. Many operators use both together. This approach helps them align technical storage assessments with local compliance requirements.
