This 5-day intensive course on Advanced Carbonate Reservoir Engineering – Solving Subsurface Challenges in Complex Carbonate Fields offers a practical, application-driven deep dive into the complexities of carbonate reservoir engineering. Through real-world case studies, participants will explore the distinctive challenges and opportunities associated with carbonate reservoirs, including heterogeneity, fluid-rock interaction, and fracture networks. His expertise has been honed through a distinguished career at Shell, where he held multiple senior roles including Principal Technical Expert and Excellence Manager for Well, Reservoir, and Facility Management (WRFM). Thorsten successfully led multi-disciplinary teams across Europe, the Middle East, and the U.S., delivering innovative solutions in both greenfield and brownfield developments. His leadership helped drive integration of development technologies and optimization of production strategies across upstream and integrated assets.
Highlights of his career experience include:
- Leading Shell’s global reservoir management initiatives to enhance upstream asset performance.
- Managing early-phase maturation of unconventional resources in Europe.
- Driving business development strategies in Shell Qatar and XTL & CO₂ projects, with a focus on sustainability and value generation.
- Serving as a Senior Reserves Consultant responsible for hydrocarbon volume assurance and reserves compliance.
He holds three Master’s degrees in Mineral Economics (Colorado School of Mines), Petroleum Economics & Management (IFP School, France), and Industrial Engineering (Karlsruhe University, Germany). Fluent in German, English, Dutch, Spanish, and (limited) French, he brings a strong multicultural and multilingual dimension to his engagements.
