About this Classroom Training
As the maritime industry faces unprecedented pressure to decarbonise, ammonia is rapidly emerging as a game-changing low-carbon alternative to traditional marine fuels. With the UN’s International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requiring ship owners to transition to cleaner fuels or face carbon taxes starting in 2028, the race for sustainable shipping solutions has accelerated dramatically.
This intensive 3-day program delivers the critical knowledge maritime professionals need to lead ammonia’s integration into their fleets. Participants will master essential competencies including ammonia bunkering operations, Ship-to-Ship (STS) protocols, vessel design modifications, specialised crew training, and regulatory compliance.
Beyond technical implementation, this course provides strategic insights through competitive analysis of ammonia versus LNG, methanol, hydrogen, and biofuels, examining energy density, technical feasibility, and market adoption drivers. Participants will engage with real-world scenarios, risk assessments, and emergency response protocols that prepare them for the immediate challenges of ammonia adoption.
Whether participant is a naval architect designing the next generation of ammonia-powered vessels, a ship captain navigating new operational protocols, or a sustainability manager developing decarbonisation strategies, this course equips participants with the actionable knowledge to transform organisation’s approach to maritime fuel.
This course will be delivered face-to-face over 3-day, comprising of 8 hours per day, 1 hour lunch and 2 breaks of 15 minutes per day. Course Duration: 19.50 hours in total, 19.50 CPD points. This course is also available in VILT.
By the end of this 3 days training course, participants will be able to:
- Explore ammonia’s potential to decarbonise the maritime industry.
- Understand ammonia bunkering processes and associated risks.
- Learn about operational challenges of ammonia-powered vessels.
- Gain insights into STS operations for ammonia as a fuel.
- Examine the role of crew training for ammonia adoption.
- Analyse future developments and partnerships for ammonia fuel adoption.
- Naval Architects involving in vessel design modifications for ammonia use.
- Marine Engineers responsible into maintenance, performance monitoring, and ammonia propulsion systems.
- Ship Captains and Masters participating in operational considerations and safety management systems.
- Marine Engineers participating with other personnel in vessel design plans.
- Bunker Operators looking into gaining expertise in ammonia bunkering processes and risk mitigation.
- Port Authority Officials in regulating and managing STS operations and bunkering.
- Safety Officers managing the risk and safety considerations related to ammonia fuel.
- Training Managers accountable for developing crew training programs for ammonia-fuelled vessels.
- Regulatory Compliance Officers navigating IMO regulations and safety management systems.
- Sustainability Managers and Consultants focusing on decarbonisation strategies in the maritime industry.
- Energy Analysts analysing market trends, competitiveness, and future outlook for alternative fuels.
- Business Development Managers exploring industry partnerships and ammonia adoption opportunities.
- Professionals with an interest in green technologies and sustainable shipping.

This course will provide comprehensive learning resources, including course materials for future reference. Each topic will commence with a clearly defined intended learning outcome (LO). The learning experience will be enriched through diverse activities such as quizzes, videos, and assessments, ensuring engagement and understanding. In addition to the core material, participants will have access to additional resources like articles, case studies, and tools. The course structure incorporates interactive elements, such as group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, enhancing hands-on learning experiences. Q&A sessions will provide opportunities for clarifications and deeper understanding.
Your expert instructor is a distinguished maritime professional with over 30 years of experience across the shipping industry, specialising in gas operations and alternative fuels. His career combines extensive seafaring experience as a Captain with strategic shore-based leadership roles, making him an authoritative voice in the maritime sector’s energy transition.
He has held several prominent positions throughout his career, including Marine Assurance Manager, Marine Operations Manager, and Marine Safety & Training Superintendent at notable companies including BW Epic Kosan and Evergas/Seapeak. His extensive sailing experience as Ship Captain on various types of gas carriers complements his expertise as a technical and operational specialist in both Brownfield and Greenfield LNG and ammonia projects.
Among his notable accomplishments, he pioneered the world’s first LNG simultaneous load and discharge operations project in U.S. waters, serving as overall in-charge. He developed the world’s first owner/operator class-approved ammonia bunkering manual for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and served as advisor on significant CO₂ and ammonia projects. His contributions include establishing comprehensive training programs for senior officers, developing LNG simulator courses, and conducting ammonia vessel design, bunkering, marine transport, and terminal assessments across multiple countries.
As an active member of SIGTTO (Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators), he has chaired working groups focused on human factors and alternative marine fuels. He has contributed to industry publications including “Gas as Fuel on Gas Carriers (LNG/LPG/NH₃)” and “LPG Shipping Suggested Competency Standards,” and is accredited as a Green Marine Europe verifier.
Throughout his career, he has forged strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as Maersk Tankers and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, providing expertise on ammonia as an alternative maritime fuel. His guidance has ensured compliance with international maritime regulations including SOLAS, MARPOL, and STCW. He brings a unique combination of practical operational experience and forward-thinking strategic vision to the maritime industry’s transition toward alternative fuels, with particular expertise in ammonia applications for maritime use.
