About this Training

This 3-day classroom course focuses on ISO 27914 compliance for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects, specifically targeting site feasibility and storage site certification. The course provides participants with invaluable insights into preparing documented evidence for ISO 27914 certification of CO₂ transport and storage facilities.

The training covers crucial aspects of CCS project development, including risk management, geological characterization, flow modelling, geomechanical assessments, and measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV) planning. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of ISO 27914 requirements and recommendations, learning how to collect and document evidence supporting capacity, injectivity, and containment risk assessments.

Through a combination of lectures, group exercises, and hands-on practice, attendees will develop the skills necessary to prepare for independent ISO certification reviews. The course emphasizes practical application, encouraging participants to begin drafting their contributions to ISO certification evidence documents during the training. This approach ensures that attendees leave with actionable knowledge and skills directly applicable to their CCS projects.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Master the process of acquiring ISO 27914 certification for different CCS project phases, with a focus on the development phase up to the Storage Development Plan.
  • Develop proficiency in preparing comprehensive documentation for geological, hydro-geological, geochemical, and geomechanical characterization and modeling, tailored to ISO 27914 requirements.
  • Gain hands-on experience in designing and documenting a measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV) plan that meets ISO standards for CCS projects.
  • Learn to conduct and document thorough risk assessments for CO₂ storage capacity, injectivity, and containment, aligning with ISO 27914 guidelines.
  • Acquire the skills to integrate multidisciplinary CCS project elements into a cohesive ISO certification evidence package, ready for independent review.

This course is ideal for professionals involved in developing CO₂ transport and storage projects. The course is designed to benefit both technical specialists and management-level professionals who need a comprehensive understanding of CCS project requirements and ISO certification processes. Participants should have a basic understanding of geological concepts and subsurface operations. While not mandatory, prior experience with risk assessment methodologies and familiarity with environmental regulations would be advantageous. The course is particularly valuable for those transitioning from traditional oil and gas roles into CCS projects, as well as professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in CCS regulatory compliance and project development.

This comprehensive course is built around ISO 27914:2017, with all participants required to have access to their own legal copy of the standard prior to enrolment (available for purchase through the ISO website or directly through us). Through interactive examples, discussions, and targeted quizzes, you’ll gain a deep understanding of key ISO clauses and their practical applications. Hands-on exercises using our provided templates will equip you with essential skills in gathering and documenting evidence for independent ISO review. The course creates an ideal environment for sharing industry best practices, developing multi-disciplinary collaboration skills, and addressing real-world CCS challenges. We encourage participants to bring their specific workplace challenges for collaborative problem-solving sessions, allowing for personalized guidance from our expert course leader and valuable peer insights.

Your expert course leader has over 30 years of experience in the oil & gas industry with in-depth expertise on subsurface and geomechanical risk assessments. He is one of the two authors of Shell’s global minimum standard on CCS containment assessment, provided technical assurance to many development projects, and contributed to or led many technical projects. Currently, he is external team member of DNV’s CCS certification services and participated in various projects over the last few years. Furthermore, he conducts risk identification, assessment and assurance reviews for CCS projects globally, and provides international training in both CCS and geomechanics to exploration and production operators and regulators.
